Only Sky make top 25...

Media companies have failed to make it onto the upper echolons of a list of Britain’s Most Admired Companies, announced in London today - although BSkyB came in 22nd place.

The awards, based on research by Nottingham Business School for Management Today magazine, looked at Britain’s ten largest companies in 22 different sectors.

Cadbury Schweppes won the award, with Unilever and BP taking second and third place, out of a total of 220 leading companies.

In the media sector, BSkyB topped the rankings but came 22nd in the overall list – a drop of fourteen places from last year.

BSkyB was followed by the WPP group and Pearson, owner of the Financial Times, who came in at 32nd and 52nd place respectively.

Rankings were based on the quality of management; financial soundness; quality of goods and services; ability to nurture talent; value as a long-term investment; capacity to innovate; quality of marketing; use of corporate assets and community and environmental responsibility.

Despite the slump in form on its previous position in 2003, BSkyB was credited for its quality of marketing and overall innovation category.

Chief executive James Murdoch was said to be “sailing a steady course” with annual turnover for 2003-04 up 15% to £3.7bn and pre-tax profit up to £480m.

The Top 10 media companies are:

BSkyB
WPP Group
Pearson
Reed Elsevier
Emap
ITV
Daily Mail and General Trust
Reuters
Yell Group
EMI
