Ofcom yesterday admitted it had been overstating the number of households with Freeview by as many as 400,000 but said the digital service was still outselling satellite rival B
SkyB by 10 to 1.
More than 5m Freeview adaptors had been sold by the end of September, and the service is now in 3.9m households.
While it is still some way behind B
SkyB, which at 7.1m paying subscribers is the dominant provider of digital TV, Freeview is growing at 13.3pc a quarter, according to Ofcom, rather than the 0.8pc growth attributed to
Sky.
Shows like Little Britain on BBC 3 have boosted freeview sales.
Freeview accounted for 82.7pc of net digital additions in the third quarter, with
Sky taking 17.8pc. Digital satellite services now have a 53.6pc share of the digital TV market, with digital terrestrial television taking 28.2pc, and cable operators 18.1pc.
Meanwhile, Ofcom said that all 18 digital replacement licences offered to the main commercial broadcasters had been accepted.
