The last sentence is the sting in the tail.
It is my belief that what individuals do in their own homes using their own receivers and programmable cards, soft cams and keys is not illegal in an EU country, especially if the service being cleared is not sold in the country where the deed is being done. It would be illegal to sell on that service, as some people do.
In the US, they have a draconian copyright law that makes the sort of thing we are doing illegal.
One can imagine the heads of companies who provide TV (we know a few) sucking up to an EU commisioner or two, in the sort of way that an EU commisioner might like to be sucked up to (and I can think of two) and we might also get a law like the one in US.
After all, experience tells us that the EU is corrupt from near the top to near the bottom. Their accounts have not been signed off by the auditors in living memory because no one can see where the money goes. If it went somewhere legal, it would be visible. The EU is not there for the consumer. It is there for failed politicians like Kinnock and Mandelson and Industry.
The price of sat services in Europe is ludicrous. The cost of a Nova card in Greece is ourageous compared to the average wage. On top of that, people who offer a minimal service are able to make money selling the cards on in another country. All the EU has to do is declare illegal, contracts that forbid e.g. TPS to market a card to a resident in UK -- and people will benefit, while Hollywood and the big footie leagues will lose some of their constipating income. Mr Beckham can spend his money on what he likes. He has just spent 500 grand on a christening party for his kids. Thats his business and his choice if he has the money. But I think overall, Europe would be a happier place if people had to pay less for Sly and the Liga and David had to tighten his belt and make do with 50 grand parties.
