Ahern vows to regulate foreign channels in Ireland

Communications Minister Dermot Ahern has vowed to do all he can to regulate foreign satellite television broadcasts into Ireland. Mr Ahern said he was unhappy with the situation whereby organisations like Sky can broadcast freely into Ireland without being subject to the same advertising restrictions as domestic broadcasters. He said he hoped to raise the matter at European level after Ireland assumes the EU presidency in January. Mr Ahern said he would like to see an EU-wide content code to regulate television advertising. "It's not just a matter of advertising revenue," he said. "It's in relation to a level playing field for regulating the content of the material that's being broadcast into our country."

My System: Sky+, DB 7000s, Gemini 4.3 in flash, Var on USB stick. Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Unaohm EP313, Swires Annie 204 Spectrum, Rover ST-4 Spectrum.

LOL, strange how he only mentions Sky, I believe that the rest of Europe have been broadcasting by satellite into Ireland for just as long.

This is more about their concerns over the BBC and later possibly the commercial channels taking viewing away from their national stations.

I don't think that he has a hope in hell.

I think you're right Razor, hadn't considered the cable lobby either.
