Sky blames supplier for HD delays

Some installations of Sky's newly-launched Sky HD service have been delayed because the set-top-boxes aren't being delivered to Sky on schedule, the digital satellite operator told Digital Spy today.

In a written statement, the company said:

"Sky HD is launching on time today but we are having to change some installation dates because of delays to HD box deliveries. We ordered more than enough boxes to meet demand and we're ready to install them but they're not arriving from our supplier as fast as we agreed.

"We think the fairest approach is to keep installations in the original order. Although this means that any delay to the first installations may have a knock-on effect on others, we believe it is important that those who requested Sky HD first will still be amongst the first to receive it.

"We're very sorry for any disappointment this has caused and we're working hard to resolve the situation. Thousands of customers will have their HD box this week and many more will be installed in time for the start of the World Cup. We'll do everything we can to bring HD to everyone as soon as possible."

Discussion about all aspects of Sky's new high definition TV service are taking place around the clock on our dedicated Sky HD forum.

From the Independent

Up to 17,000 households that have pre-ordered high definition (HD) television packages from BSkyB, have been told they may not receive them in time for the start of the football World Cup.

Sky launches its new HD service today (23rd May 2006), boasting that it had received some 40,000 orders for the new technology.

Sky said it installed some 2,500 sets yesterday - equivalent to one every 12 seconds. But they conceded this would slow down over the coming days.

Some heads should get a knocking for this.

One minute its the personal web invite - then, maybe, you're told your install will be late. After the World Cup late (the only known thing in HD for most Brits) - that is crap.

That is extreme lame marketing. Its not like you could have waited outside HMV (oxford Street) for an X-Box at two in the morning - SKY is still a people service.

SKY announced yonks ago that Thomson (the only manufacturer) would be making the one and only HD STB+ WTF? 40,000 isn't an instant shock kind of number.

Next we will here of a shortage of chips in Singapore. Blech.

If 40,000 was too many and they're 17,000 short then Thomson must have been only expecting to get 23,000 orders.

I wonder what Sky spent chasing those orders - it must have cost them a packet for every order.

Like a lot of electronic promises, game systems, computers, etc. that don't make the launch date. All you do is annoy your customers if you take orders you cannot fill.

Before Christmas the market should be flooded and not much to watch!

I wonder if Thomson's French HD orders were all met -

My System: Channel Master 1.8m, Lenson Heat 80cm triple feed 13° 19° & 28°, Triax TD110 with Jeager SuperJack, sky+ Pace v2, Panasonic TU-DSB20, Humax 5400, no name FTA and heap of old analogue receivers

Words eggs basket and one come to mind. Humax is currently flooding European market with HD boxes but sky don’t do business with Koreans.
