EC push for faster switch to digital TV

The European Commission has called for European Union member governments to submit planned dates for the switch from analogue to digital broadcasting.

There is no common EU date for the switch at the moment, but governments have already agreed to publish their changeover dates by the end of the year. The commission's paper suggests that the switch should be made as soon as possible, while ensuring that consumers have enough information and adequate warning to get used to new digital TV services and to upgrade their equipment. It advises governments on the policy pitfalls and identifies items that should be part of switch-over plans: National measures should be clear, proportionate, timely and technologically neutral to avoid discriminating against certain parties and distorting market competition.
