High definition test transmissions

ITV HD, C4 HD, Five HD appear in London

High definition test transmissions for ITV, Channel 4 and Five have started broadcasting on low power from the Crystal Palace transmitter in London.

Digital Spy forum members report that the multiplex, located on UHF channel 27, is currently carrying two 576i SD streams and one 1080i HD service. However, most viewers with a digital terrestrial TV set-top-box in London will not be able to see the streams because they are encoded in MPEG-4, a more advanced standard than the current MPEG-2.

The transmissions are part of a previously-announced HD trial in the capital.

There have been some reports that the low power HD transmissions on channel 27 from Crystal Palace are interfering with the reception in London of DTT multiplex A from Bluebell Hill in Kent.
