Radio Caroline finally arrive on sky epg

Radio Caroline has joined the Sky platform after years of fund-raising for an EPG slot.

Radio Caroline has famously broadcast from ships at sea from 1964 to 1990 and has been broadcasting off the Sky EPG for several months.

A station spokesman comments on today's Sky launch: "Being on Sky's EPG will bring us more listeners, some of whom may remember the station from our offshore days but many will be listening for the first time."

"It's been a long time coming and we must thank those many people who have donated money to our EPG Fund to bring this to fruition."

My System: Pace 2200 Sky digibox with ftv card, Comag SL65 FTA sat receiver, 40cm Sky minidish, Setpal terrestrial receiver (for free uk tv only!).

As a boy, I can remember listening to Radio Caroline on my "tranny radio" under the bedclothes. Great stuff!

Anazingly, the BBC didn't have a dedicated pop music channel until 1967. Offshore pirate radio was the only way to follow the charts. Until it was closed down in 1967, using the euphemistically named "marine offences act".

See: http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/pipexdsl/r/arar93/mds975/Content/pirateradio.html

The BBC treated pop as "not real music", and didn't start Radio 1 until some months after the pirates had been shut down.

Here's an interesting account from a former BBC employee:

Coming home after a few beers, used to annoy the neighbours by blasting out (on my Mullard amp) the station closedown jazz theme 'Round Midnight' by Jimmy McGriff (the Thelonious Monk standard - great to know there were some jazz lovers on the station's payroll )

Happy days.

Yeah, great to hear Caroline are back, as a matter of interest does anyone know how much a radio EPG slot costs on Sky and for that matter how much for a tv slot. Cheers, Chuck

Steady there Rolf, you might mention the gramophone next (woofers and tweeters ?).
My history with pop started with a single of Alice Coppers School's Out with some money borrowed funds from Pater in 1972, and then they saw the act three weeks later on Top of the Pops, complete with epee, make up, dubious leather get up and young women. Needless to say the single 'vanished' from my small collection rather quickly.
Then I started listening to Capital Radio, Nicky Horne was probably the most memorable.

...then there was Radio Scotland, had to be lucky to receive it when conditions were right down south.

Stuart Henry was a great DJ there, unfortunately no longer with us.

They never really went away - they have been around in one form or another with small scale licences since the ship was impounded in 1990. They have been on Sky well over a year.

Radio is about 20 thousand ukp a year.

TV is 75 thousand give or take a bit. Channels can get discounts if they take the scrambling option,.

I have contributed in many ways to Radio Caroline over the years and I understand that the cost is £20,000 per annum.

My System: Motorised dish, dvd players and recorders; a freeview box, broadband, VCRs, four TVs, mobiles, pcs, a mac, Ipod, digital cameras...the lot!

Talking of Radio Caroline, I absolutely hated Kenny Everade; I know great many people liked him, but for me he was a turn-off, and his TV show was just the pits.

All those stupid radio jingles, like: "It's Kenny, Kenny; the Kenny Everade Show; it's Kenny, Kenny, on your radio!"

Cringe.
