TRT bans Piglet

Turkey’s TRT bans Winnie the Pooh’s best friend from TV screen
June 18th, 2006, 11:26 UTC by Andy
Turkish state broadcaster TRT has decided not to broadcast the cartoon series Winnie the Pooh because the best friend of Winnie is Piglet. Within Islam, the pig is considered an unclean animal. Programme planners at TRT discussed whether they could edit out Piglet, but decided against it because the character appears so frequently. Observers believe that this TRT decision shows that the broadcaster is beginning to move towards more Islamic programming. Turkey’s population is predominantly Islamic, but the country has a secular system. However, the current Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is the leader of the conservative religious Justice and Development Party party.

My System: Sky+, DB 7000s, Gemini 4.3 in flash, Var on USB stick. Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Unaohm EP313, Swires Annie 204 Spectrum, Rover ST-4 Spectrum.

I guess that they won't be showing Babe either then, unless they edit the pig out.

Oh dear

I have to admit this sort of nonsense defeats me and drives me to despair. How can a caricature cartoon affect a childs attitude to a real pig. Even Jews who share the same dislike of the pig would not go to these extremes. It is a typical example of where a law was created and to protect the essence of the law, another law was made. I call it the orange theory , the law is the flesh of the orange the pith is another law to protect the first and the orange skin is the nonsence created to protect both laws. Yes it is quite true and any meat inspector will tell you that the pig is one of the most unclean animals in existence having all sorts of organisms inside it feeding off it, hence the laws made, but banning a cartoon program because it contains a cartoon caricature of a pig!!!!! come on this is the real world
But hey what do I care? it is their kids who are missing out on their childhood not mine

Just to let you know that this news has been totally denied by TRT, which has shown plenty of programmes and shows with pigs before, just a load of media nonsense.

Update from media network weblog:

TRT denies it has banned Winnie the Pooh
June 19th, 2006, 08:44 UTC by Andy
Turkish national broadcaster TRT has denied that it has decided to scrap Winnie the Pooh from its schedule, as reported yesterday. According to TRT, it has signed an exclusive rights deal to show Walt Disney material, but some of the material has not yet arrived. TRT says it plans to resume showing Winnie the Pooh in the near future, and denies that the idea of omitting Piglet was ever discussed. In fact, the series has already been shown on other channels in Turkey, and is also available on DVD.

Strange, perhaps it is someone trying to make some mischief.

The latest is that TRT is planning to sue the newspaper that originally published this story.

Ah, is it of a Tabloid description by any chance?
