New look for BBC 1

BBC ONE today (Tuesday 26 September) unveiled a new on-screen identity based around the symbol of a circle.

Peter Fincham, Controller, BBC ONE, said: "In an increasingly competitive marketplace a channel needs to stand out from the crowd and I believe our new identity is just what's needed for BBC ONE.

"It's set in the everyday but shows people doing extraordinary things. It's got variety and range – everything from daredevil motorbikes to synchronised hippos. It's warm and it's dynamic.

If he were not a wizard, from head down to the root, you would have got to worry-your DB only boots

I would have said that in a competitive market the way to stand out is not broadcast $hit programmes?

My System: Sky+, DB 7000s, Gemini 4.3 in flash, Var on USB stick. Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Unaohm EP313, Swires Annie 204 Spectrum, Rover ST-4 Spectrum.

I couldn't agree more mhku, my thoughts to the letter.

The BBC have an almost unique opportunity to make their own high quality material without concern of short term audience figures and advertising revenue, perhaps they should take more advantage of it.

Anything that gets rid of those damned stupid dancers gets my vote.

Where's the discontent? I meant the quality of their TV programs is enough to differentiate them from "the others"; it wasn't a complaint.

I suppose they'll use a line for BBC two, a triangle for BBC three and a square for BBC four :-) ?

Distinctly worrying!

If Auntie are spending huge amounts of money on new video graphics, then - quite simply - there's less available for actual programmes.

I was horrified 2 days ago - watching Dr Who Confidential - to be told they'd spent huge sums on just one underwater shot that lasted only 5 seconds (and couldn't be seen properly anyway!), just to get a "slightly nicer effect". The point being, Dr Who has now lost its way completely (never mind that I personally think it's become crap) ......

You don't necessarily have to spend huge money for good programmes, Last night I saw that BBC4 thing about "piano-mania", it was riveting viewing!

My System: Silvercrest SL65 FTA receiver + two dish setups. One 90cm. one 60cm two universal LNB's.

The BBC tells the public it needs BBC3, BBC4, BBC News24, and not one but two children's channels. Why this is beats me when it then repeats programmes over and over, first runs on BBC 3 or 4 are then repeated on BBC1 and 2 and older programmes are repeated on BBC 1 and 2 so many times one loses count.
Why not just have one channel for all the repeats?

£1.2m is a drop in the ocean. Think of the payments made to 'clebrities' to remain on the Beeb. I dread to think what offer was made for Noel Edmonds to appear on that Lottery show last Saturday evening.

and how much will it cost the BBC (and ITV) to stop Johney Foreigner watching their programmes, switching from FTA to FTV ? It was exactly this cost which spurred the BBC (and ITV) to end FTV encoding, and to go FTA. So in fact, thanks to us, we've saved you british mugs quite some money, you should be thankful for that

Yes, it's a drop in the ocean, but still 1m. Although, I suspect, really quite a lot more ....

I don't mind them spending money on special effects (I like the new Doctor Who format), I don't mind them spending money on retaining personalities, although some are probably paid more than I would have thought responsible. I definitely disagreed with them spending millions of pounds to show Harry Potter the other Christmas though, as I believe that the money could have been spent so much more productively and on original programming, programming which we knwo people will watch if it is good and original enough.

I don't know why they just don't return to Ceefax or the Test Card. And do that 24/7, it'll certainly raise the viewing figures as there's bug**r all on now!

So many points - where do I start (rub hands).

First, Each ident costs (in todays money) about 140,000 per ident - up from the dancers era at 110,000, so I read.

BBC drama can cost upwards of 250,000 per episode.

So, while these (eventual) 16 idents (140,000 x 16 - sic) will work out a lot - at 30 airings a day, they will be cost effective over the cycle (typically 4-6 years).

A treat for you.

I was hired as a freelance 'artist' to touch-up (frame-by-frame) the Balloon idents - I was getting rid of neg sparkles on the monastery ident when Prince Di died. Whatever, those days work brought in a few thousand for me. A hundred thousand for an ident is cheap - if you think of the process from beginning to end (I was only an expensive butt-end artist working through a post-production company - that had made their own quote). OK, its complicated.

Anyway, whatever the cost, I think the new idents are crap. They remind me of the Eurovision Song Contest postcards.

Red Bee (the once BBC inhouse, now Outhouse, graphics department) also made your fave ITV branding - which is also crap too, IMHO.

The new idents are not new or inventive - they are corporate and restrictive - actually forget my BS - they are just crap - best summed up by Channel controller focus-group clap-trap. Focus group people are usually paid to give an opnion. I got ten quid some years back.

Apart from the fact that the 'one' - in the new logo - doesn't appear to be in a Gill Sans fon and is off-centre Nambie Pamby (who gave a rule book to the BBC defining the BBC 'blocks' and useage) must be turning in his old age ad agency.

I never understood why Nambie Pamby (bbc logo and identity gurus) went for red? The graphics colours don't change for the Nations? Frankly, even with the new less red idents, I think its an insult toward the other nations that still pay a licence fee.

Heho.

Forgot to add that these new idents air on the 7th Oct 2006 (Sat).

Come on! Why so nasty to Auntie? Some of the best quality programs ever made; envied by the world. Think about it, apart from the usual diet of American (lets say) programs (all because of English and marketing) we see here (Aussi's don't even count) how many other international shows do we get to see? Yes in recent years Channel 4 and 5 have given them a close run; but who does 4 and 5 model them selves on? And what a compliment if foreigners want to watch Auntie’s shows; don’t we watch theirs when we can? Please don’t kill her. Remember that unity is always strength. Without the BBC our entertainment would be sad. Just go to any other country and see just how much the Beeb is valued and we should value her too.

Yes, indeed, the BBC is a bit like "democracy", meaning it's the worst system there is, except for all the other systems which have already been tried .....

But, that doesn't mean we can't criticise it!

Despite almost total privatisation, and dire imposed "management mania" (thankyou, John Birt!), Auntie Beeb still retains much of the original "Reithian" public service ethos, which we must keep going as best we can ......

Live action idents are just so 20th century. I think the only PSB that has pushed them to the next level is Channel 4.
