TNT-HD in May 2004

TNT has announced plans to launch a high definition channel, TNT-HD, in May 2004. The launch of TNT-HD will come during the network's coverage of the NBA Western Conference Finals, with plans underway to make TNT's coverage of the NBA All-Star Game available in HD in February before the actual channel goes live.

In addition to broadcasting most of TNT's drama programmes, sports and movies in HD, the network also plans to simulcast The Grid - a co-production between the BBC and TNT looking at counter-terrorism efforts by British and American agents - in high-definition on TNT-HD in addition to the channel's regular SD feed. The series will not be available in HD resolution in Europe.

Mark Lazarus, president of TNT's parent, the Turner Entertainment Group, said:

"With the launch of TNT-HD, we are sending television into a new dimension. Top-rated TNT has an incredible array of successful dramatic programming – from Law & Order and NBA coverage to award-winning TNT Originals and blockbuster movies – giving the network an unprecedented combination of programming that is ideally suited to the HDTV format. TNT-HD means more than just high-def. It means high drama."

Andrew Heller, president of domestic distribution at TBS, said:

"Over the years, Turner Broadcasting has offered multiple high-tech initiatives, including VOD, broadband and HDTV, always pushing to expand the scope of its activities in the new technology sector. The HDTV platform adds value for our distribution partners and our customers by offering them the kind of high-profile, dramatic programming that has made TNT a television leader in an environment that heralds the future of television."
