Government freezes Digital Plus pay-TV prices

Spanish pay-TV group Sogecable will not be able to raise the subscription prices at Digital Plus as the Government has decided to freeze its fees again this year. The Government's right to intervene in its fee policy was part of the deal whereby the merger between Sogecable-owned Canal Satelite Digital and Telefonica-controlled Via Digital, was approved under 34 conditions. One of them was that until 2006 Sogecable's prices would not be increased above the inflation minus X ( X being a variable established by the Telecommunications Market Commission). This is a setback to Sogecable's ambition to turn Digital Plus into a profitable company in 2005.
