ITV: new E1.4million 'theatre of news'

UK broadcaster ITV has unveiled a new E1.5 million news studio. The studio - dubbed a "Theatre of News" by ITN - will be on air from next Monday.

According to the Guardian newspaper, the state-of-the-art virtual set features a giant Imax cinema-style news wall, enabling bulletin producers to call up four video sources at any one time. The studio allows one presenter to sit behind an oval silver desk, with the other walking around in front of the giant curved screen.

The editor-in-chief of ITV News, David Mannion, said the set was a "world first" and "marries reality and virtual reality in a way that hasn't been done before".

My System: Various digiboxes, broken Nokia 9800S, numerous analogue boxes. My lovely little lappy, HP Omnibook 6100

I hope they also introduce widescreen transmissions at the same time. Nothing to indicate that in this press release though...

No, sounds a tad bigger. , whether it will be better is however a different matter.

One might be forgiven for suggesting that that desk came from the same workshop that has just delivered about five to the BBC. LOL.

(-)neg points:-

1. Blue and yellow always looks great ....... On trains in Holland

2. Shimmery blue set nonsense: anyone remember the BBC's foray into virtual news sets (clue: BBC crystal coat of arms, blue set, pompus music, and the lovely Moira Stewart (weekends only)). The BBC didn't have the right kit then, so, I guess that ITV now do.

3. HUGE hand-over screen: Very State television - very old Russian style.

4. Why don't they present the date in the known and understood English/European format.

(+) points:-

1-15. Its still in 4:3 just like news television should be.

16. Great that they have tightened-up their on-screen look to back-up their award winning journalistic talent.

Mark.

Excuse me????

16:9 is the way to future, I would like even wider if it were possible.

[Wed: edited to be nicer]

Agreed, but not the 16:9 that some in the UK see as the "future".

I might change my mind when Hell has frozen-over and I can watch the CBS Evening News in HD, via my SKY-HD digibox, on a genuine HD ready DTV set.
