My System: 'Fortec Star Passion' (& a dead SL65) One of them big Woks on the outside, and a thingy that moves it about a bit.
Question What replacement for my deceased SL65?

Can anyone suggest a suitable replacement for my deceased SL65?
(How to kill an SL65 (a cautionary tale))

I'd like it to be flashable or whatever ,
and preferably not too expensive.

What would you buy if you were buying the box from scratch, and why.

My System: TM6800HD+TD110+StabHH90 motor,TM1000D+Orbital 1m Multifeed 16E,23E,28E.DigitAlB movies. A Bigsat BS-S77CX and a Sky Dodgibox.

Hi,

A pretty cheap patchable box would be a Technomate TM5200, with good support. I saw them selling for £50 odd the other day plus postage.

I wouldn't buy one for myself now as I already have a TM1000, so I would want to upgrade to a HD box, or a Dreambox.

What if I plan to buy a 1080p HDTV in the near future

What about this one,

Or any alternatives in the same catagory?

On second thoughts, I think HD compatibility is the way to go.

I have now read the thread on the Passion, it looks very good.

But on another site I read

"the main consensus is its a poor reciever with better pic quality to be found elsewhere, have a look at a technomate or arion reciever" !!!

Perhaps Mr. Moderator may want to move this post to the HD section?

The unnofficial support for the Fortec's does seem to dry up very quickly. The TM HD boxes look like the support is there, Couldn't tell you what they are like though.

I think the thread is Ok where it is for the moment.

Thanks Robbo

When you talk about unnofficial support, you mean in forums such as this?

Surely as more people purchase these units and become experienced with them, the support will increase?

No, I meant forums that provide unofficial firmware, not such as this.

Same theory applies surely, Supply & demand?

Actually, I have been offered the Fortec Star Passion for 85 quid, so I think I might have a dabble.

Will tell you in the next couple of days.

I will be leaving the heat sink alone on this one

Well, for some forums, there is a vested intererest of course.

Still, if it has a CAM slot, you would be OK, just more to buy and program.

Fortec Star Passion purchased.

Looks great to me. No HDTV yet I have been tied up for past two weeks in the US looking at Real Estate, so it will be running on normal tv for a while.
