Would you care to be more specific and give us an example of what you cannot receive and on which satellite?

I would reccommend the the TM5200,TM5300+ or the TM5400CI+ for being inexpensive and very easy to use for a novice. They are patchable. Prices from £50 to £90. One advantage of a CAM route is that they can be used with any receiver with a CAM slot.

For Discovery and animal planet, do a channel search on Kingofsat and check what satellites they are on and what packages, this should help you find the answer.

As Topper says, you need to be more specific for an answer to your last question.

With a dish of 90cm, it would be rather difficult to receive Showtime.
There is a thread about receiving Nilesat in Europe.
Use the forum search button and it should show the thread. Plenty of info there.

These channels are usually dubbed in local languages so even if you manage to open them w/o subscription, you will not be able to enjoy it.
On the otherhand, Sky Italia seem to give you these channels in Italian and the original language.
But it is very difficult to buy a subscription outside Italy, at a reasonable price.
Please check the Lyngsat package page and the Sky Italia package below:

On a standard 90cm dish showtime is impossible up in Yorkshire. You are lucky to get some of the vertical transponders.

I think discovery Spain was on 5E the other week free to air with English audio, not checked lately to see if is still there.

Both are openig the same channels at the moment, but who knows what the future holds.
You could get a patchable receiver with CI slot, to cover future options.
