Hardware advice needed

Since getting a V+ box I have been using my homebrew linux PVR to record off satellite instead, but the problem is I have to change channels by hand. When I had an old NTL digibox for I used a Red-Eye Serial to do this, but it can't be made to talk to my current satellite receiver, a Technomate 5500. I haven't had any luck trying to control the receiver through the serial interface and it may not even be possible.

To sum up, I'm looking for either of the following:

A cheap(ish) and aesthetically-pleasing IR blaster which will connect to my PVR's RS232 or USB port and control my Technomate 5500;

A satellite receiver which can be controlled, at least to the extent of changing the channel, by some other means than using the remote control or pressing buttons.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
