Advice on internal dish please.

hello,
new here and the world of satellite TV in general.
I live in a flat with a communal dish, and as it is fairly difficult to add dish up there to get hotbird as well,is it possible to have a dish in the house just behind the window glass pointing at the right direction and still get a decent signal for hotbird 2?
(dont laugh if i said something completelly stupid) but i have no experience in this AT ALL!

Hi, Welcome to the forum Vasp3690,

Yes it is possible to pickup a signal through glass.

If you do a forum search you should find a few examples.

I'm pretty sure there is one really long thread by "Christiancov"

Edit,

Advice on internal dish please.

Hello christian,
im really interested in this indoor setup you have managed.I just moved here and i live in a block of flats that uses a communal dish.Im on the 3d floor with windows facing rather to bid odd direction, mostly to the west. There is a small window that could reach the east, which im aiming at getting(hotbird 2 at 13oEAST,right?).i was wondering since im completelly new to this, what kind of dish and lnb should i go for in order to obtain the best result from receiving the hotbird 2.

if possible please email me at EMAIL ADDRESS REMOVED if you think this thread is inapropriate to discuss.
thanks
vasilis

You have to be a member for some time and have a certain number of posts to have PM priviledges this is owing to previous abuse of the system by people with other motives for joining.

The no posting of Email addresses as mentioned in the RULES is to protect both you to avoid it being read by web bots and to protect the integrity of the forum

No probs

The OP hasn't posted for a while, so probably wouldn't have replied anyway.

To get a signal through a widow, you just need a clear view of the satellite you want, and a bit of luck. No special dish/LNB etc is needed. It is a case of 'suck it and see', which is what Christian_Cov did, and one of the reasons why I directed you to his thread in the first place. Maybe you could try it with a minidish stuck out of an open window to start with. You need to see 13 degrees east of due south approximately.

My System: Pace Sky HD, DM7000s, CubeRevo 3000HDPVR, Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Televes H45 Digital Spectrum analyser.

Have started a new thread, as the information is pretty much common knowledge, there are several users on the forum who have installed and have working internal dishes.

It depends on the size of your window and the type of glazing as well as the way the window faces. A sky minidish will receive Hotbird channels from most of the UK, you don't say whereabouts you are.

I think I'll be able to help here...

First off, how big is the window, and is it double or single glazed? If the window is big enough, all you'll need is an 80CM dish, satellite grade cable and a Universal Single-output LNB, if you're using more than one receiver you'll need a Twin or Quad output (see the advertisers at the top for this). Next you'll need something to mount it on, this can be a tripod, a specialised dish mount or something as simple as a car tyre. Lastly is the positioning, you need to place the dish where it gets the most signal through the window when properly aligned to 13e, otherwise you'll get poor reception or just diddlysquat, also site it's where it's not going to be in the way and bumped into, otherwise you'll be re-aligning it a lot.

Good luck and have fun...

My System: none given

See my posting http://www.satellites.co.uk/satellit.../paperclip.gif Digital satellite indoors, oh yes
And don't start me off again, lol, actually I've just relented and put my ugly thing, I mean fortec 65cm outside and brought the minidish back in which is still easily as ever picking up most of 13.0E and 19.2 and 28.2-5 and so on.

In hindsight, might be trial and error, so for once I won't bang on about how easy it is, at first can be darn hard, once you have gotten something however it is normally fairly easy.

I've never used any satellite finding meters yet, patience and luck and looking at anyone else's gives you a start and then just trial and error and of course lots of time.

Lastly, who's laughing, as I've found out myself on here, some of the things, dishes on their sides, sitting in chairs with a cuppa, hmm, well sitting in chairs anyway, lol, and so on, have shown to be effective.

Some are over cautious, I realize now, maybe with good reason, meaning you can often cope with a smaller dish and behind the glass and net curtains and so on, but come a really bad weather day and you might have been just above borderline before, finds you wanting now and annoyed that your sport is suddenly gone or glitching like mad and not really watchable.
You did not say where you were, further south if in the UK the better, of Wales to North England Ireland the harder it gets.

Good luck anyway, incidently and ironically, probably because in fairness they are bit more stronger, the minidishes are like £35 from maplins and the fortec 65cm £30, bit thinner and easier to bend, knock about, which worries me when we get another end time bad storm come through.

Hope that helps some, see if you can get a cheap second hand one, or something, give it a whirl, so long as facing the right way, and big enough window, mine's double glazed and worked through that, and net curtains and the ordinary curtains, no worries, you should be fine.

Chow4now my friend.

My System: sky

well, thanks for all the answers for starters.
I have lots of negative issues im afraid.

1)im located in Newcastle Upon tyne, which is quite north, but lets say i get by that with a 60cm dish

2) i need to understand something. When we say that hotbird points at 13oEAST does that mean east of south? Is that how all satellites find their way in the sky?

3)My main window is quite big, double glazing but it is being devided by wooden poles into roughly 60cm x 30cm rectangles.Unfortunatelly it faces basically to the west. From what i have seen of the other dishes as well at the comunal dish the block uses, there is only 1 of these rectangles i might be able to reach the satellite with, and the dish cannot be outside the window im afraid,as it has no place to be mounted on.Inside i can use some kind of tripod probably...
As for LNBs,im only going to be using this dish for hotbird and just connect and disconnect my sky system whenever i want to switch from one to another.i dont mind the fuss,as it is not something permanent.

So am i asking too much here? What are my chances to actually manage to reach that satellite?
cheers once again!

i read something as well.
Is it possible to modify the communal dish in a way that it would still be getting the SKy for every1 and also allow me(and anyone else who has the equipment) to receive the hotbird 2 as well?I read somewhere that if the dish is large enough or has 2 lnbs it is possible. Is that correct? If it is not too expensive,it may be a solution,as later on if the dish needs to be replaced, when i leave the flat or rent somewhere else,i can still get my dish and the block can have the one they are using now, right?

what costs are we talking about here?

That would be possible, but the dish owners wouldn't do it. It would involve modifying the dish with additional LNBs, then the cabling and distribution system would need to be adapted or added to which would mean more wires and boxes to install, so, you're talking well into the £1000's...

If your window is more west-facing than south, you're not going to get Hotbird through the window, but there is 1 more option and this is a portable dish which has a sucker mount (used to attach to windows, car or caravan roofs and other smooth surfaces), if you can get the dish to see at least 19e then you'll be able to get 13e, and yes, 13 East means East of South...

Maplin usually have the portable kits, and usually lidl has the same kit but that won't be again until next year as they only recently sold them...

With a Western facing window, no chance at all. On a small Eastern facing small window, probably no chance there either I'm afraid. With the small window open, so the dish could actually poke out through it, then yes, a very good chance I would have thought.

A south facing winow would have given you a reasonable chance also.
