My System: sky digibox, superb Sony DVD recorder, older Sony video recorder, totally crap Hitachi TV, and an awful Windows XP PC with 1GB ram!
Question Can I watch mainland China CCTV1 & 2 channels, etc. in UK?

In a nutshell, the Beijing Olympics are due to start on August 8th and it's just been announced (yesterday) by China Central Television that the CCTV International channels such as CCTV4, CCTV9, CCTV-F and CCTV-E will NOT be broadcasting the opening or closing ceremonies or any of the Beijing Olympic events. The only CCTV transmissions showing these events will be restricted to China mainland channels CCTV 1, 2, etc.

This is due to the strict telecast rights imposed by the International Olympic Committee which makes a first for China to observe copyright rules and regulations.

I'm based in the UK and was rather looking forward to watching the Olympic games on CCTV 9 which I can watch via Sky, so wonder if anyone knows if it is possible to watch any of the CCTV mainland based satellite channels such as CCTV 1, 2, etc. which will be broadcasting these events?

Any help always appreciated - please PM me with details if you don't want the info live on the forum

My System: Sky UK. FTA analogue & digital satellite from 5 fixed dishes (5E/7E/9E/13E/16E /19E/23E/28E) Pace MSS100, Echostar IP3000VA, Technomate TM-1000D, Dreambox 7020S

The only CCTV channels available anywhere in Europe are CCTV 4 & 9.

One or two of the web streaming sites carry some of the CCTV channels.

Thanks for the info, I wasn't aware I could receive CCTV4. Can this be viewed via my Sky dish like CCTV9? I think I can manually add channels on a one-off basis to the Sky progs, or do I need a motorised dish for this?

I will do some research for the streaming websites because I wasn't aware this was possible, this would be mighty useful

My System: Sky+, DB 7000s, Gemini 4.3 in flash, Var on USB stick. Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Unaohm EP313, Swires Annie 204 Spectrum, Rover ST-4 Spectrum.

It's on Eurobird 9 at 9 degrees East. You will need a separate 80cm dish and probably best to get a separate receiver.

Hi there guys, can I just say thank you to you all for all this information which is very useful.

CCTV4, CCTV9, CCTV-F and CCTV-E are the International channels for China Central Television, and unfortunately these are the channel that are subject to this broadcasting restriction of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Judging by what you have said, it appears to nigh on impossible to pick up CCTV1 and CCTV2 which is understandable considering their satellite footprint is aimed at China and not the western world.

If you find any workarounds please let me know.

BTY, I'm not having much luck with the streaming sites!

Thanks again

Strange this one. Nothing scans on that TP now, although Flysat still lists a GTV package as still using that frequency (?)

I'll try and do a blind scan of the sat to see where that GTV package has shifted to

A blind scan now finds that GTV package on 11.900V (I'm doing 5MHz steps, so it comes up either side of that frequency in Transedit).

Still no sign of CCTV1 though.

Turok, it was originally thought to be CCTV1, but is actually CCTV News.
