Replace sky+ with?

Hi, fed up with the continual price hikes by Sky and are looking to change to a freesat type set up. Have the sky+ setup (ie record 2 channels/watch another) and would like to retain this. Also, is it possible to obtain Eurosport FTA via Hotbird?

Happy to have 2 Sats on my dish but was trying to avoid the motorised route. As I'm in Scotland will the existing dish suffice or does the size need to be bigger?

Also, recommendations on best PVR appreciated.

Looking to be greedy ie most free view material for the money!

Cheers,

Andy

My System: Sky+, DB 7000s, Gemini 4.3 in flash, Var on USB stick. Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Unaohm EP313, Swires Annie 204 Spectrum, Rover ST-4 Spectrum.

There's not much around to compete with Sky+ in my opinion, I have a motorised system with a Dreambox, but would not want to lose my Sky+, it has to be one of the best dedicated receivers around.

Why not keep the plus for the minimum package and get a motorised dish for other bits and pieces.

My System: TM6800HD+TD110+StabHH90 motor,TM1000D+Orbital 1m Multifeed 16E,23E,28E.DigitAlB movies. A Bigsat BS-S77CX and a Sky Dodgibox.

There doesn't appear to be a FTA Eurosport on Hotbird, there is one on Astra 19E though.

Yes you would most likely need a larger dish for 2 sats off the same dish, especiallly if you wanted to have adequate rain fade margin.

The other option to motorised, but not as much choice is to have say 3 or 4 LNBs on a larger 80cm to 1m dish.

I have never been spoilt by Sky+, but had Sky for a few years and it took quite a while for the addiction to wear off, when I cancelled it.

My System: Dreambox 800 Nabilo Blackhole v0.3/250 Gig/ Dreambox 500s-(clone) PLi Jade/ Relook 400s 160 Gig-/AbCom Enigma Foretec 90cm Dish with Nikkai Diseqc Motor- 2 sky+ receivers fixed 28.2 east.

I must agree with Rolf. People slate Sky for all sorts of reasons, but their receivers do exactly what it says on the tin. They get Sky Uk perfect. This is all they are built to do and again even though I have 3 linux boxes now I would not want to loose my Sky+ boxes. For ease of use it cant be beaten. Because of this I dont get bugged by the rest of the family to schedule their viewing plans for them, which leaves me more time to play with my linux machines. The FreeSat Hd PVR machines should be available around December/January from what I have read, so this may be a viable alternative when its up and running, till then take the minimum Sky sub that still allows free Sky+.

You say you dont wanna go motorised, but its great fun. Honest!. And its not expenive. If your anyway computer literate consider getting a linux satellite receiver, you will be amazed what these boxes can do. I have fitted 6 systems for my friends after they saw what I could view, particularly on Saturdays around 3pm. They all bought the cheapest boxes they could find, all around the £90 mark though I think they can be bought even cheaper now. Add a motor and a dish and your away for under £200.(if you do your own install) I just love this new hobby and all the guys on here are friendly and helpful aswell as extremely knowledgeable.

My System: SKY+

Gents, thanks for all your feedback I was pretty much of the opinion that there isn't nothing rivaling Sky+ at the moment. So looking at downgrading that package and going the 1m motorised route in addition, would like to know what's recommended - still looking for a hard disk recording option as well with this.

Comments much appreciated.

Thanks,

Andy

With the masterly marketing so far shown by Freesat you just know it's more likely to be January missing the Christmas sales bonanza.
