My System: Technomate 6800 HD. Motorised 88 cm dish Installed by Robbo Mac computers
More help please

Being old and new to this system I request some advice in simple terms (Non tech.) My new system fitted expertly by a very helpful forum member here is fine but mainly encrypted channels. I guess I need to buy a CAM and card but don't have a clue which. I was previously on Analogue for years and had a good range of German channels for, main interest, sport and music as well as the odd titillation. Which card should I get and will it require some form of downloaded update ? Any info appreciated.

Hi aileen,
It would help if you can give us more information about your satellite system, perhaps with the help of the helpful member if it is too tech for you.
Dish size
Pointing to which satellite
Receiver make and model
Which channels are you interested to watch

A receiver with CAM will enable you to insert a smartcard with subscription, but foreign subscriptions are not cheap.
You mentioned German channels, well the only packages in German that are available are Premiere on Astra 19.2E and SRG (Swiss) on Hot Bird 13E.
You can check the packages section for more details.

Thanks for that. System set up by Robbo71 Good job, very neat.

Channels:
Thor 2/3
Eutelsat
Hotbird
Astra 1
Astra 1D3a
Astra2 / Eurobird

88 cm Dish, Box Clarke 1500 plus

Looking for anything under: Sport, music and anything interesting
Probably expecting too much

Are there any UK cards that are worth having and inexpensive.
Cannot believe there are so may gentlefolk using sat. systems if its as boring as that I have so far found. Thanks

My System: Sky UK. FTA analogue & digital satellite from 5 fixed dishes (5E/7E/9E/13E/16E /19E/23E/28E) Pace MSS100, Echostar IP3000VA, Technomate TM-1000D, Dreambox 7020S

The last noble sat warrior to fly the olden flag of Analogue

The cheapest card available in the UK is probably the DigitAlb card which is about 200 quid for the version which includes the sport.

Cards for other providers are available but tend to be horribly expensive if bought through a Uk reseller - some of them are over 1000 quid a year!

Theres plenty of fta music channels playing everything from rock to pop to Romanian folk music if you have a look around.

My System: TM6800HD+TD110+StabHH90 motor,TM1000D+Orbital 1m +Moteck motor.45E to 45W. 2 x minidishes.DigitAlB movies. A Bigsat BS-S77CX and a Sky Dodgibox.

aileen has 1W,9E,13E and 19E on a fixed TD88, with a Clarke Tech 1500, which has no CAM slot, just a card slot. Unforunately no 16E as the LNBs are not the alps type.

Probably a good idea to check that your transponder list is up to date aileen, by checking on lyngsat.

I checked the receiver and it is for FTA channels only, no mention of a card slot either.
So it looks like FTA channels only, or replace it with a receiver that has a CAM slot (either embedded or CI) if you want to experiment with subscription packages.

Thanks guys. No CAM slot on box by choice as I have a CAM slot on my Panasonic TV which my box is played through. Assume I was correct on that?
Does this help my scope for more channels? There are some channels I received on analogue previously (German) I cannot find now. Have a grandson learning German so he uses it. If all cards are as expensive as mentioned there must be something very good from them if they are actually purchased. Still open to suggestions as to increasing my range until I can afford a motor.
What does 'patchable' mean? I guess it means a software update.
Haven't learnt the jargon yet.

I think that the CAM slot on your Panasonic TV is for Digital terrestrial TV use, perhaps the TV manual will provide more information.

Not sure what would happen, if you plugged your analogue box into the IF loopthrough on the Clarke Tech, you may still be able to get some of the analogue channels that way (while they last) if you tune to a similar frequency and the same polaristion on the Clarke Tech and chose 19.2E. Analoguesat would no doubt know if this is possible.

Yes, it just means an 'unofficial' software update.

Without a CAM slot on the receiver, you will not be able to use a subscription smartcard.
There are few FTA German channels on Hot Bird 13E like ARD, ZDF, Arte, RTL,
and a lot of FTA digital on Astra 19.2E, so you don't really need the analog ones.
_http://www.lyngsat.com/astra19.html
Just need to rescan all the transponders with German channels which have the yellow (creme) background in the listing to make sure they are added in the receiver's channels list.
