Basic question about PVR ready receiver

Apologies in advance for what I'm sure will appear to most a daft question.

I managed to install a technomate receiver and motorised dish up recently and would like to be able to record the occasional programme. The receiver has a usb port and is "PVR ready." I know that some terrestial freeview receivers have this built it to record unto a hard drive. What sort of device would I need to use to make use of this facility?

My System: Pace Sky HD, DM7000s, CubeRevo 3000HDPVR, Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Televes H45 Digital Spectrum analyser.

Just a USB hard drive should do it.

Thanks for you answer Rolfw but I'm embarrassed to say that I'm still not entirely clear. Would something like an external hard drive work and, if so, how are the recorded programmes played back?
