My System: Sky+, FreeView, Sony VAIO Laptop & O2 Broadband.
Which FTA receiver?

Hi, I've been asked to install a FTA satellite system for a friend to receive channels from 19.2e. I'm after a simple but reliable box for around £60 to £70.

I've been searching and have narrowed my choices down to these 4, which would you recommend? or can anyone recommend one in the same price range?

Thanks

Topfield TF6500

Technomate TM 5200D USB Super

MANHATTAN XT-F

Humax F3-Fox-CI

My System: Zone1, DSI8215 SkyHD, Thomson DSI4214, TF5000CI, Dreambox DM800 HD PVR - Nab BH0.12, TM-5200D, Gibertini 104cm, SNH-031, 36v Actuator, Vbox-II, 42°E to 30°W, Sling Media, Televes H45 Digital Processing Analyser, Satlook Micro+G2 NIT, Rover SDM 1s

All are good entry level receivers. Technomate for ease of use would be my preference.

My System: Gibertini 1M XP Premium - Inverto Black Ultra .2db LNB - Technomate 2200 motor - Vantage 7100 HD. 57E - 22W - 60cm solid oval dish fixed on 28.2 - Humax Freesat HD - Sony Bravia LCD - Sony BluRay and Sony Home Cinema

I'd like to recommend the Manhattan, it's driven my dish and provided excellent service since Xmas.

It occasionally locks up and the manual could be clearer but for a fixed system, I'd give it a definite thumbs up.

My System: Triax 1.1m and Orbital 80cm Motorised Dishes. Various fixed Dishes. Eclectic selection of Digital and Analogue Receivers. Complex switching and distribution that SWMBO cannot fathom. Nor me.

I'll agree with Technomate TM 5200D USB Super having USB port and to be able to upgrade faster. But for now on the Dreambox is the answer, at least for people living in ME.

Thanks for the replies technomate seems to get the thumbs up which was my initial choice followed by the manhattan. I had read a few people saying the technomate suffers from lip sync issues on the scart, has anyone come accross this before? I've got a few more days before i buy a receiver so any further advice on receivers appreciated.

Ha by the way, Do we have Nokia or Panasonic receivers? I've seen once while I was a young boy.
I saw a Nokia receiver in Iran, ya in Iran selling in the stores. While it was and still is prohibited having these stuff. In a non-legal way people can have whatever they desire, money is the solution. But the government is against these luxury.

If money is the problem then go to maplin.co.uk and you could pick up a FTA fortec star B stock for under £30. They work well have 2 for the bedrooms for 28 and 13 19.

I've had problems with around 25% of the fortecstar receivers I've encountered on installations, certainly wouldn't trust a "B" grade one.

Fickle firmware, for sure. My first DSAT Box was a Fortec Star Lifetime Classic (Early version).

It took a Lifetime to set up and is by no means a Classic!

SWMBO has it now ..................

My System: I only have an old sky dish and no receiver :(

Guys

this is probably a stupid question but does the Technomate needs any patching or configuration to pick up Freesat?

cheers

No it doesn't, will be fine straight out of the box.

Just to add, have also found recently with new Technomates that they are set up with FREESAT channels in the favourites option.

cool thanks - one of the attractive features IMHO is way some of the Technomates have a USB so you can plug in your own hard drive. I read somewhere that this was difficult to do as you have to format the hard drive (?) in a funny way? Is that true?

HHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA? What shall we do? Although I don't have that kinds of receivers for now but I've never heard of that things. Seems funny!!! Means that people must have losing their data in order to have a receiver, or to install a program.!!!!!!!!!!!
