My System: Elap motorised satellite dish and digital receiver disecq 1.2
Remote control for satellite receiver

Hello

Hope I'm posting this in the right place!

I have an Elap Ellypse digital satellite receiver, and the remote control has stopped working. I opened and cleaned it, replaced batteries, etc, still no joy.

Does anyone know how I can get a replacement? I've tried looking for the brand name without success. It's a french system - do remote controls work in different countries or are they specific? How do you know that a generic remote will work with your machine?

Any advice much appreciated!

My System: Triax 1.1m and Orbital 80cm Motorised Dishes. Various fixed Dishes. Eclectic selection of Digital and Analogue Receivers. Complex switching and distribution that SWMBO cannot fathom. Nor me.

Are you entirely sure it is the Telecommander that is the problem, as opposed to the IR Detector on the Receiver?

If you are sure, then try abrading the battery cradle terminal points with fine sandpaper or similar (holding it upside down so any loosened corroded bits falls into open space, not into the Telecommander!). I have a Kaon RC that requires this treatment on occasion (and a Mobile Phone, ditto!).

Also, are you using the Remote in a room with energised CFL Lighting, as these new fangled Low Energy lamps have been known to upset simple IR systems.

Finally, do ensure you don't use Rechargeable Batteries as the terminal voltage is often just a smidge too low.

My System: Echostar 2110 Technomate 5200D Porty 2 S Crest SL65 1m H-H Lidl 80cm on TM2200 Lidl 40cm on Omnisat.
Faulty remote control.

Check the IR output of the remote by pointing it at a CCTV system, digital
camera or Mobile phone camera. It should show up very well.

thanks for the suggestions -- but

hi again

I have tested the remote control with a digital camera, and it seems to be dead.

If anyone can make any suggestions about a replacement, I'd be really grateful.

Many thanks

Did you try cleaning the Battery Cradle terminals?

Ha!

By pure coincidence my disabled neighbour asked me to look at the Remote Control for his kitchen Stereo yesterday afternoon - guess what?

The batteries had leaked slightly and exacerbated corrosion of one of the cradle terminals.

Thorough clean up and now all working.

The problem is the power demands are so very low for these batteries that they sometimes get so old that they physically degrade before "going flat".

Thanks for this, but I have checked the battery cradle -- all perfectly clean, no sign of corrosion at all.

Looks like the remote control really is dead!

Ok, fair enough - I have no idea where you can get a replacement from, though.

It is quite difficult to find an exact replacement, when the brand is virtually not known at all.
I would go for a good universal remote, and if you have a friend/neighbor/relative/etc. who has the same model, you can take your universal remote to his place, and try to "teach" the universal all or most of the functions using the good remote.
Logitech has an excellent remote, but rather expensive.
Other than that, buy a new receiver.

Gosh, that sounds a bit drastic! Can you tell me which is a good universal remote? I don't know anyone who could help with "teaching", so if there is one that is particularly easy to setup, that would be great.

Thank you for your help with this

I checked on Elap and it seems that this company discontinued it's line in 2001.
The Elap Ellypse is an FTA receiver, and you should be able to buy a new one instead as they are quite cheap, even a second hand.
Can't recommend any universal remotes, and there is always a chance that it will not recognize your receiver model. Better invest your money on a new receiver.
Do you have at least any access to the receiver using the front panel?
Alternatively, try to get your remote working by a professional. They can't charge you much as a new remote from well known brands costs between 10-30 euros.
Should take the receiver as well to the shop so that they can test it.
Suspect either IR transmitter diode or the chip inside.

Hi,
Search in Ebay France for "Elap" and you should find a universal remote that works on the model you mention. I found one on offer for under 15 euros, with a telephone number you could call to make sure that it is indeed compatible with your set.
