Strong SRT-6880 For Cyfra+

I decided to buy a dedicated receiver for subscription to Cyfra+, as I had problems with the languages setup keeping the preferred language while zapping.
So I ordered Strong SRT 6880 receiver which seems to be very popular in Poland for the Cyfra+ sub.
For about 43 Euro + shipment, I though it is a bargain, especially with an embedded Seca (Mediaguard) card slot and small size.
I also thought that I could use it as an FTA receiver for Amos.
Was excited when it arrived, so I got down to hooking it up and the first thing I noticed is that it asked for the smartcard.
So I inseted my Cyfra+ card and it started to work.
After finding my way to setting it up with English menus, everything was a piece of cake.
Made a new channels scan for Hot Bird 13E, and I got all the channels that are there, except no data channels.
When I selected an FTA channel, it opened OK.
Took out the smartcard, and it stopped working, asking for the smartcard.
So this rules out the possibility of using it as an FTA receiver, if I need to insert a Cyfra+ card in order to operate it.
Will try this when my card expires, just to see if it needs a valid card or even an expired card would work.
The sad news is that it didn't solve the languages problem that was my main reason for the purchase, but it also has a very annoying feature which I didn't have using a Seca CI Module and Nokia 9800S:
If I select English audio, it automatically displays Polish subtitles by default.
If I choose Polish audio, it is possible to switch off the Polish subtitle.
It doesn't have a shutdown capability, only standby, which is rather annoying as it gets really hot after a while, just like with operating mode.
The remote is nice and lightweight
In conclusion, I made a bad choice ordering it.

My System: Dreambox 7020si, Technomate TM600, Technomate TM9100 Fracarro Penta 85 Dish, Televes 0.6dB Quad lnb, TM SG2200 motor. 60cm Channel Master BSB dish on 28e, Mti Blueline 0.2db Twin Lnb. Rover ST-4 Meter Cyfra+ Subscription

Not what i wanted to hear

I'm intending to get one purely to activate the card so i can use it in my Dreambox

I see it this way its cheaper than buying a new Aston 2 Cam which will only ever get used for the same reason

Once the cards activated it will go back into its box never to be seen until i need a new card

Its just a precaution as i really don't want to waste money on a card i can't activate

The likelyhood is that if one Cyfra receiver operates in this way that they all will. Its more than likely going to have propriety software that is the same for all boxes just the same way as Sky UK

When I used the card in my Dreambox 7000S, it worked well and the card updated periodically. Usually on the 1st / 10th / 20th of the month, give or take few days more.
Unfortunately I got strange shutdown problem of the box, which I haven't solved till now, so I started looking for other solutions.
Do you have a card already and have you experienced validation problem?
I think that the shop activates the card before shipment
I would invest in a new Seca CAM instead. I am so disappointed with the STR-6880.

Well

Just for fun did you try viewing an FTA channel with the card incorrectly inserted just in case it was just looking to trip a micro switch and nothing more complicated?

No, it didn't work. It is a genuine smartcard reader. These guys know what they are doing.
I am hoping that an expired card will activate the receiver.
Contrary to my belief that expired card can make a good beer mat, I am hoping that I can declare a new use for them.

The reason for buying the receiver over the cam is that the receiver will apparently accept the new Nagra3 encryption once the card swap out is completed in the migration from Seca2 to Nagra3

I don't want to fork out £80 for a cam that will be of no use to me in 6 months time.

I intend to use the Cyfra card as my main viewing in all honesty.

I'm also looking to get another card to supplement it at the end of next month

Hello nanochickin,
Are you sure you are talking about Cyfra+ and not Polsat Cyfrowy?
I have no knowledge about Cyfra+ changing it's encryption system to Nagra 3, but Polsat Cyfrowy is.
The STR-6880 has ONLY support for Seca (Mediaguard) and it will not support Nagravision for sure.

Both articles were dated in 2008. There is no mention of which year the swap would be completed.
Do you have a Cyfra+ card already?
According to the Lyngsat Cyfra+ Package, I can see many channels are encrypted in Mediaguard and Nagravision, but these channels are also offered by Polsat Cyfrowy which have gone Nagravision 3 already.

Need to investigate further.
If the Cyfra + swap is true, I can't see how they can change the cardreader support from Seca to Nagravision on my STR-6880?
There is a satellite firmware version updating (BTW, there is no RS-232 connector).

As far as I remember, the channels that were shared between Polsat Cyfrowy and Cyfra + AND had both Seca and Nagravision encryption, were compromised. The Seca2 encryption was not compromised.
Once Polsat Cyfrowy changed to Nagravision 3, both packages Polsat Cyfrowy and Cyfra+ became secure.
I see absolutely no reason why Cyfra+ is going to swap cards as their Seca2 encryption was not compromised in the first place.
My card expires in August and I am sure that they will be selling the pre-paid card in Seca 2 for the validation period of 6 months and not in Nagravision 3.
