My System: Imac Not yet bought system
Any Satellite enthusiast in York

Not sure if this is the right forum perhaps mderators will point me to the the correct forum.
This is my first real post and I am just starting out, I haven't yet bought my system but I had in mind a Manhattan or Technosat to start with.
Initially I would be looking at free to air on a motorised or a pair of LNBs on a fixed dish, but would like to know more about other systems.
Are there any members in the York area I could meet with and pick their brains in order to get started with the correct equipment?
I have read and re-read the forums and there is an awful lot to learn it is mind boggling especially the different transponder set ups.
Thanks in advance
Col

Well, not quite.

Thread moved to the JFTB section, even though it is a quick chat for the time being.

Col, what would you like to watch with a suitable system, and are there any things that might prevent you from having a dish installed (conservation area, rented accomodation etc) ?

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness"

Thanks, I own my own property so no problem with the dish except for local planning regs. I have a 60cm dish up at the moment facing the 28.2 jobber, I would like to watch anything FTA that is available and also get some german channels for language learning. I know about freesat and Humax Rx but I wanted to progress a bit more and learn as I go. I know that I only need a decent receiver with blind search for FTA channels on various sats but am not sure where the cards/cams come into play and I am able to find some other satellites as my house has a almost unobstructed view south.
Not sure too when to use the various transponder settings on any given satellite.
I thought if I could speak to someone face to face I could probably pick things up better. This site is fantastic but there is an awful lot of info to digest and a lot is very advanced for a "L Plater"
Thanks again
Col

My System: IDD CI24 ECONO MM Penta 1.20 Galaxy II 1.2Mtr Polar MTG yes it has been on the arc for 21 years and is still driven by a modified wiper motor from a Ford Anglia. It's like me sometimes groans but always performs

Everyone was an 'L Plater' at one time or another

Leave your 60cm alone and get a 1.0 mtr to put alongside it as you are allowed two dishes on your own property unless it is Grade 2 listed or a specific conservation area.

I'm afraid York is a long way from me, but you really need to just read what is already on the forum. Do not be intimidated by the equipment, thousands have put their own system together and installed it. I recommend you read the installation stickies and threads and then see how you feel

Hi Col I live in York, but I'm like you reading up on previous posts to try and learn and then decide which receiver, LNB etc to buy.

My System: TM6800HD, TM1000, TM600 Linux,TM5200, TM2200 motor, Triax TD110 dish + Fortec 85cm. Meter=Satlook Micro+G2 NIT

Of course, there is (or can be if you want) a lot to learn, but it doesn't happen all at once. Bit by bit you pick things up, by fiddling and trial and error quite a bit in my case, and gradually more and more pieces fall into place. Finding out for yourself is a great way to learn, as the info generally sticks a lot better. I'm now on my 4th dish and 4th receiver LOL.
