seek advice before purchase - french channels + football

Hi all,

I am very new to the satellite world but i've spent the last week reading extensively on this great forum which has put me in a slightly better position i think..

I live in Glasgow, UK. What i need is to get the classic french channels and football games. The best/cheapest way i found to get this combination is via hotbird - using 2 subscriptions: the BI*S french package and the Al Jaze*era sport package.

My question is:
Do i need to buy the box specifically from BI*S?
To have both subscriptions I would need a compatible box with 2 card slots? Are such boxes common? Can you recommand one ?

thank you
Chad

My System: Pace Sky HD, DM7000s, CubeRevo 3000HDPVR, Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Televes H45 Digital Spectrum analyser.

Hi Chad, I presume you mean Bis TV, a receiver with multicrypt embedded card slot should read this card, comes in two flavours of encryption at the moment, may also be necessary to buy the Bis receiver. New on 5W Bis TV

The Al Jazeira package requires a Viaccess CAM for activation, so a Receiver with embedded multicrypt card slot and a CI slot for a Viaccess CAM should work.

Thanks Rolf!
Yes it is the Bis package i was referring to.
OK. I will go with your suggestion, would you have one or 2 models of such receivers in mind ? I honestly have no clue of what's a good or bad brand for receivers.
I am looking for the equivalent of DELL (or better) for PCs if possible.

thanks a lot !

My System: Sky+, Compaq Laptop

Hi

I'm in Glasgow too and am looking to get an Al Jazeera card. Been trying to find out for ages about an appropriate receiver without any real success but luckily someone the other night on this forum who has what I'm after told me the Technomate 5400 ci+ was a good bet. Has room for a CAM and a card slot. I was looking for something that I wasn't going to have to muck about with CAMs with (to save a bit of cash really) but he told me that you need the CAM for updates which the card reading receivers can't do themselves (bang went that idea!). This is what I'm going to go for. If you search around at the moment you can get the whole shebang (dish, receiver, remote and card) for about £250 I think.

Cheers

Neil
