Forgive the stupid question, but . . .

I want to point a dish at a 0.8W satellite. I really need the dish to go on the back of the house (moaning neighbours), but the back of my house faces north-east. Will I still be able to put the dish round the back?
I realise this is a daft newbie question, but I don't want to fork out for gear that I can't use.

No such thing as a daft question mate, only daft answers. You may know that in the UK dishes have to be below the highest point of a roof. So, in order to see 1 west (commonly known as) you would need to have a wall mount and a pole which lifted the dish pretty high above your rear gutter but remaining below the roof line. Might just be ok but someone else will confirm. Alternatively you could 'hide' a dish at the bottom of the garden, facing the house. As always you need a clear line of sight to whatever 'bird' you are seeking.

As Jimbo says, you can always put it on a pole at the back. 1 West is the highest elevation of all the sats from most of mainland UK at 30 degrees for the south, so you only need to set it high enough to clear the highest point of the roof in the line of sight.

If you have a fairly standard pitch on the roof, this will probably be less than 45 degrees and you will be addressing it at an angle, so may get away with a couple of feet above the gutter.

Thanks for the help - I've got a pretty shallow roof, so the bottom of the garden could be the solution. I suppose then, if I want to watch something like Astra or the hotbirds, it would be easier to put the dish round the back?

If you have a shallow roof pitch and you're only going for an 80 or 90cm dish, you can put a DiseqC motor on it and get all that you want froma pole mount.
