hotbird and eutelsat

hi installed a fixed dish 80 cm and monoblock lnb 3 degree separation in norfolk. for a digi alb package i can receive the channels but there is not much signal to spare.i needed to spend quite a long time fine tunning it to get it to work.i fear it will be playing up when it rains.the dish came with the reciever as a package has any one used this dish size and monoblock before and had any problems.i an getting about 30 to 40 percent signal quality.it was breaking up at 25 percent.thanks in advance.

Hi,

I haven't got that setup, but I assume that you have the 16E LNB at the dish's focus, and not hotbird.

no rob its mounted central not clamped to one of the lnbs but round both of them so i suppose both are not prime focus. that is the bracket that came with it.

My System: Sky+, DB 7000s, Gemini 4.3 in flash, Var on USB stick. Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Unaohm EP313, Swires Annie 204 Spectrum, Rover ST-4 Spectrum.

Have you adjusted the skew to peak the performance? It is more critical on this type of LNB, in fact it needs to be pretty much spot on to align the dish properly in the first place.

Oh right, I ve seen some that clamp one of them on the centre, with the other sticking out sideways.(pehaps it'sjust the 6degree ones) Do you get a good signal with a single LNB at focus? ( re-align dish slightly).
Because if you don't, it will obviously not be possible to do it with a monoblock as you have described.

Do you use the output of the 16E part of the LNB when trying to align?

the 16 degree side needs to be on the left as u look at the dish from the front and that side of the mono block needs switching which my meter will not do.so i alinged on hotbird.i also tried connecting my meter to the lnb out on the receiver and using the reciever to switch but did not seem to work.so to fine tune i just ran a coax from the rf output to a small hand held tv.and displayed the tunning screen from the receiver.i had the left side of the lnb a tadd higher than the right this seemed to work best.i think its spot on at the moment i think my only option will be a larger dish or try a new lnb bracket so i can get the 16 degree on the focal point.

Well, yes, your LNB positioning all makes sense. You could be right, a bigger dish needed, because with that set up, you are only 1.5 degrees off the focus anyway. Looking on the net, it usual for the 3degree monoblocs to be centre mounted. A single LNB mounted on the normal holder and optimized will confirm whether it's possible to get a good signal with your dish.

Regarding electric shocks from the cable.

Yes I have felt those too, tingles a bit. I don't know if it's right or not though. It's probably something to do with the earthing.

thanks rob to be honest i sent my son up the ladder to take the old dish down and told him its all disconnected.he shouted at me saying he got a shock but like i say the ony thing that the receiver was connected to was the scart lead.which was connected to the switched on tv.once i disconnected the scart the voltage went.Any way i dont think i will get a call to install a bigger dish until it rains.thanks again have a good evening..
