For a Diseqc motor you will need a nice firm 2 inch diam' scaffold pole, that has been mounted perfectly vertical.

Have a read of rolfw's guide.

so your receiver controls the dish and you need to plug it into a wall socket for power i know this sound stupid but i have no idea on these things

For a Diseqc motor, all its power and control goes up the coax cable that goes to the LNB. No other connections to the motor required, all the power comes from the sat box.

I wouldn't have thought there would be a problem with motorising a dish with the TM. A Sky digibox, on the other hand, has no means to control a motor, or switch for that matter.

Sharing a motorised dish between the TM and a Sky digibox, using a quad LNB, with the TM controlling the motor, would work in theory.
However the Sky box, doesn't like being away from 28.2E for very long,
and you would probably keep getting problems with it. I had this for a little while, and I kept losing the EPG. If motorising it is best to keep the sky dish separate.

my plan is to use the sky card in the tm and run a sky box as well in another room as freeview and bin the subsription as i will get digitalb for football the tm 9100 has a harddrive to record and run a dvd recorder from the sky box to record, this allowing me to record one side while watching another crazy i know but living in italy this is the only way to get football and english tv on the cheap. the only other way i can think is get a twin tuner receiver with harddrive that does what a tm does i not sure if anybody make such a machine cheers

Since you have a Linux box already, I am surpised you haven't looked at the Dreamboxes. Pretty sure that there is a model there somewhere that has twin tuners and Hard disk. ( expensive though)

The cheapo satfinder meters usually go inline with the coax that goes to the LNB, and also run off the LNBs supply, so it would need connecting like that for it to work. The problem is, the meter would give signal strength only ( You would have to move your dish round also), so you wouldn't be able to check what satellite it was. You should be able to check that you had the right sat with the Sky box though, just put the appropriate transponders into the additional channels, and see if you get the right picture. Check on lyngsat to ensure that you pick a transponder with sybol rates and FEC that the skybox can handle.

Yes probably, The cheapo sat meters derive their power from the receiver, unless you can find one that doesn't, or cobble together a supply for it using a battery or something. Also the Sky box will enable you to check which sat it is, with a bit of fiddling.
Also there is 23.5E in there somewhere, that may confuse issues.

Sky Italia is on Hot Bird 13E.
They have few FTA channels but the rest are NDS encrypted and need a subscription.

One way, is to find a FTA channel off Lyngsat that the box is capable of receiving and enter its transponder details into it and scan. If it comes up with a picture for the channel you were expecting, then the sat is confirmed.
