New flat which already has a dish, how do i get it to work?

I have just moved into my new flat and there is already a satelite dish already fitted with a cable leading into my living room.

What are my first steps to getting satelite?

I am guessing firstly i need to work out what type of dish i have and based upon this will decide what my next steps are.

What details do i need?

Any help would be much appreciated.

My System: 43cm Dish, Sky Plus, FRACARRO PENTA 85, Invacom Twin, Moteck SG2100a H-H DiSEqC Motor, TF5000CI, TM-5200D, Rover Discovery ST-4, Rover SDM-1s, 57E to 58W

If it's a new flat, the building may well have a communal IRS satellite system which basically is a 1 dish system that has at least 1 feed into each flat.

Most of these type of dishes are set up to receive $ky. A simple call to a local independent satellite/aerial company should be able to confirm this. Also if they are an agent for $ky, they should be able to set you up to the system with subscription etc.

On the other hand, you may have your own dish on the wall which from your posting sounds like this is what you have. In which case you can still do the above or call $ky of course to arrange a box & subscription.

Hope this helps

My System: Technomate TM6800D & TM1000D+ receivers, Stab H-H90 motorised Triax 1m dish 42E to 30W. Fixed Orbital 1m on 26E, 2 x minidishes.DigitAlB movies. A Bigsat BS-S77CX and a Sky Dodgibox.

If you didn't want to pay any subscription to Sky, assuming the dish is pointed at 28E, you could get a FTA satellite receiver and receive the Free channels.

Thanks for all the posts, i have learnt so much already.

I am pretty sure it is not a sky minidish, but a larger white dish. But as my flatmate is the one who found it i will double check.

Are there methods to recieve sky channels without subscribing to skys tv packages. As i am only at the flat for 6 months and they only offer 12 month contracts.

Thanks

The Sky Pay Once watch forever Pack may be of interest, you get some Sky channels for 4 months. I think Argos do it for £75. I suggest you read the full terms and conditions or contact Sky.
