My System: passion receiver with stub motorized dish
No Video and audio

I have recently purchased a fortec passion receiver kit. I erected the dish, lined it up to Astra 28e and after much re-aligning got a signal plus quality figure of 55%. However the message for any channel selected was no video and audio. I re-aligned and picked up eurobird 9, on this one I managed to get vision and audio for CNN, the rest of the channels were scrambled. Could somebody tell me what the message means and how I can put it right. Thanks

My System: Sky+, DB 7000s, Gemini 4.3 in flash, Var on USB stick. Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Unaohm EP313, Swires Annie 204 Spectrum, Rover ST-4 Spectrum.

It normally suggests that you are pointing at the wrong satellite, most common "wrong satellite" for Astra 28.2E, is Astra 19.2 E.

Thanks for that. I braved the wind and repositioned as your advice, I have now got a dozen channels including a brilliant HD Luxe channel. The signal and quality is on 70%, but no BBC,ITV, etc channels.

I installed a sky analogue dish a few years ago and it was me shouting down to my wife from the roof checking when we got a picture. This digital really seems a different animal, even tough I am using a meter it seems so difficult.

Well if you are receiving Luxe HD, sounds like you may be on the right satellite, although it is on others, including Eurobird 9 at 9E and Hellas Sat 39E. http://www.luxe.tv/EN/free-to-air-satellite.php

what other channels do you receive?

Check to see that you have all of the correct transponder frequencies listed on your receiver against this list. http://www.lyngsat.com/28east.html

My System: Fortec Star Platinum 2 CI slot + embedded., Sat+ FTA, HP NC6000 Laptop1.6gig,Time Athlon XP2400mhz Desktop. 80cm dish, twin LNB for Hotbird 13e,Astra 19e.

Try a visit to the websites of Satcodx or Lyngsat, where you will find channel listings and settings, and satellite position information. These websites are our 'bible'.
You ought to be getting hundreds of channels rather than dozens, mate.
My advice to 'newbies' is always....keep trying, you'll get there!
Enjoy your viewing!
By the way, your Fortec Star Passion can do tricks! A bit of research regarding patches would provide some interesting information....

That should be Astra 28.2, so you are pointing at the right satellite, you need to make sure that the LNB is skewed for best reception, if looking at the dish from behind the LNB, it should be at about 25 minutes to the hour.

From the channels you list, it would appear that you are only receiving a couple of transponders, are you doing a full satellite scan? Also check your LNB settings, should be set to universal.

PS. sorry, just realised that you show in your profile a motorised dish, are you using the motor, or just the fixed dish?

Yes it is motorised, set to usals. I have set the motor at what I believe is 28e and moved it elsewhere but do not do too well apart from Turksat where I get plenty of stations on turksat, moved back to 28e and only get the channels I told you about. Lnb set to universal, but will check again and do a full search. Plenty of TPs are in the satellite list for 28e and all the other satellites. I have also noted the audio is out of sync with the video on luxe.

Have you read my sticky thread on setting up a motorised system?

If you do it by the book as per that thread, you will not suffer the type of problems you are experiencing at the moment.

weather improved dramatically, quickly re-checked alignments. Signal quality stayed about 70%. Since the only thing I had not done was move the LNB I moved it a few degrees to left standing from behind and the signal peaked at 90%. I rescanned and bingo hundreds of channels on 28e. I am confused since I thought you did not skew LNBs on a motorized dish. Have I got the wrong LNB and will this affect the reception on other satellites when I move the dish.

You don't but your motor is not set up correctly.

The top of the arc should be at your actual longitude, for you I guess that would be something like 1 degree east (what is your longitude?). You then need to make sure the elevation is set on the motor to your actual latitude and swing the whole lot around to your due South and align on the nearest due South satellite, probably 1W for you. Using USALS, send the motor to Thor 1W after entering your coordinates in the USALS panel, then go about aligning on that satellite, by swinging the whole lot on the mast and the dish elevation only.

This is all covered in my howto.

Forget the dish setting, it is not relevant, only the motor elevation is important.

Reset the receiver, probably best to factory default, then type in your coordinates in the USALS menu, then send the dish to 1W Thor. that's the last time you touch the motor control in the receiver until you have aligned the dish on Thor.

Then follow my procedure for lining up on Thor, use transponder 11325 H http://www.lyngsat.com/1west.html

Once you've found that satellite, tighten everything up and you can then use the receiver to drive the dish.

PS. Straighten up the lnb to zero skew prior to this.
