85cm Clear Dish

hi guys..need some help..

Have recently installed a DarkMotor on my el cheapo 80cm thin metal dish bought from lidls a couple of years ago.

It transpires that moving the motor with the dish on is quite a noisy whilst without the dish its pretty quiet

further investigation revealed that the dish actually maginfies the noise of the motor quite auidibly.

so..im thinking of getting a 85cm clear dish..

i see it has a gian of 38.4 at 11.9Ghz and efficienty of 72%.

wonder if you guys have any thoughts on this dish, or comments about your noise levels if you have one motorised!

was also contemplating a fibreglass dish..anything to keep the noise levels down....

so i would be grateful for comments on solid and clear dishes that do not acentuate the likkle noise of the motors.

thanks in advance...

Mmm hello

Welcome to the forum satkitten

Firstly I have to say the size of dish (within reason) is not going to affect the noise level, neither is the choice of using a clear, fibreglass or mesh dish going to make much of a difference. An unloaded motor will not make much noise as the gears are unloaded whether worm, helical of straight cut, but the addition of some weight in the form of a dish will affect the noise created. I use a car wipermotor to drive my dish and that makes a noise but I would not expect anything else to be honest. It all depends upon your definition of a noise

He battled for 3 days against the Tux and won! Hurray!!

Try another motor from Moteck or ask about the quitest motors available.
Can you attach an audio file so that we can also hear it?

My System: Sky+, DB 7000s, Gemini 4.3 in flash, Var on USB stick. Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Unaohm EP313, Swires Annie 204 Spectrum, Rover ST-4 Spectrum.

My Moteck and transparent dish runs quite quietly, as does the transparent dish in my motor installation guide, the plastic does not resonate in the same way as the thin steel. I'm not at home at the moment, otherwise I would make a recording of the dish moving.

Motecks are one of the quieter motors available.

If he were not a wizard, from head down to the root, you would have got to worry-your DB only boots

I can hear my Moteck motor/ transparent dish when I move it but it's not what I'd call loud.

If the dish is resonating have you tried sticking rubber pads (sound proofing) to the back of the dish?

Me too I've got a moteck coupled with an 85cm clear dish. I reckon it resonates a tad less than it used to when it was mounted with a metal one. Thinking of it , it makes nothing but sense as the plastic will absorb the sound better.

thanks

thanksguys...i think i narrowed it down to a combination of the cheapo tin dish composition, along with the tin azimuth thing connecting the dish to the motor arm....

i am sure we will get the 85cm clear dish soon,

1. because it wont be as resonant
2. because it will look nicer when we look out the window!
3. because the missus says it will be cool to have a plastic dish!!!!!
