Moteck motor, cheap receiver and dead LNBs! What should I replace to get it working?

Hello,
This is my setup:
Cheap FTA receiver (Zehnder DR600) => Moteck SG 2100A motor => Normal LNB

When I first connected the motor I might have short circuited receiver. In any case.

When I connected everything after that the motor worked fine, however the LNB didn't work at all.

When I then removed the motor the LNB still didn't work. Therefore I replaced the LNB and removed the motor. That worked.

So I added the motor again but got the same problem, the motor worked but not the LNB.

When I then removed the motor the LNB still didn't work so I replaced it again (as I did the first time).

I think I've thrown away five LNBs so far trying to get the motor and LNB to work at the same time together.

What do you think is the problem? What should I replace? The motor or the receiver? Or anything else?

Maybe the receiver is too weak to power a motor? But then why do I have to replace the LNB after trying with the motor? I mean there is a setting for diseq motor in the receiver...

So I really need your help. I really don't want to replace something that actually was working.

Regards
Oskar

Check cable F type connections into motor & LNb - all ends.

The Motecks draw 350mA when moving I think, if the motor moves then the rx can handle it

Hello!
I've recutted most cables and I've checked all F type connections. This is really irritating not knowing what to do...

Have you tried resetting the Moteck Motor. There is a small hole on the underside of the motor body. Push something thin into the hole and the light will blink a few times to confirm it's been reset

P.S motor will draw 350mA and LNb around 95mA - 120mA

Hello,
I havn't tried that but can that really fix the problem with the receiver/motor destroying the LNBs?

First thing to do is reset the Moteck if the system fails. How sure are you the LNb's are being destroyed ??? what are you experiencing to claim the LNB's are failing ???

My System: Zehnder DR600 digital receiver, 90cm Amstrad dish and one MTI Blue Line 0,2db LNB.

Hello,
When I removed the motor and connected the LNB directly to the receiver I didn't get anything with the LNB but when I replace the LNB it worked again.

When I after that tried to connect the motor again the new LNB stopped working and when I removed the motor I still couldn't use the LNB until I replaced it with a new one (third LNB).

Could the LNBs still work then but not with my receiver? Sounds strange...

Do you have anyone who could try out your 'faulty' LNBs for you?

The only thing I can think of that might damage the LNB is the motor itself, ( apart from the receiver that is, but it works OK with that). I know with relays that a reverse protection diode is necesary to prevent voltage spikes going the wrong way up any sensitive electronic equipment, I'm not familiar with the circuity of Diseqc motors, but maybe the same could apply to your motor.

Process of elimination. Fit a new motor and see.

My System: Pace Sky HD, DM7000s, CubeRevo 3000HDPVR, Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Televes H45 Digital Spectrum analyser.

The other thing to consider is that the motor is moving the dish off beam when being connected, this would result in a loss of signal. A reset would stop it doing this.

ok, but as said, after having had a LNB connected to the motor I can't use it anymore. Not with my receiver, nor with any other receiver I've tried with.

What I thought was that the receiver maybe is sending to much power to the LNB or something with the motor is connected, do you think that is possible?

The reason why I havn't tried with another motor is that I would have to buy a new motor to do that, and that is rather expensive.. I bought the motor in germany so I couldn't return it to the store...

So you think the only way is to pay for a new motor and that it is the motor that is faulty?

Really thanks,

Measure the DC voltage present at the output of the receiver and motor. Should be 13vdc OR 18vdc.

Had the same problem whith Moteck and Nokia 9500S , then I found out the lnb got only out of order when i moved the dish on a hor. transponder .
It seems that the motor was taken to much current for the Nokia , so the LNB voltage (18 V) was sinking .
My idea is that the receiver is trying to keep de 18 V up and when the motor stops , the voltage is pieking way to far .

I destroyed 2 lnb's , but only the highband sektion . on 22kHz no switching anymore .

later i have made a 3erd F-conn. on the motor feeding seperat 15 V directly to the relay contacts .

Hello,
Thanks for your help. That was about what I was thinking about. In other words, you think the receiver is the problem and that it should work if I change to another receiver? I can't draw another cable to the receiver, and I know the receiver is a very cheap so then it should be to buy a new receiver?

Or maybe it is the motor that is fooling the receiver to output too much power?

Trust1, did you try with another receiver? Did it work then as it should work with one cable?

Regards,

By me it was defenitly the receiver , with my MaxPlus 2100S no problems .
But when the gearing is mounted to tight , the motor current increase extreemly .
On the outside of the moteck there are 2 screws , with them you can losen or tighten the gearing (see the manual of the moteck .

My soldering iron is smoking all the time .

Hello,
OK, I didn't know that about the screws but I'll definitely check it now (just have to buy another LNB first).

I'm planning to buy a dreambox, preferably in the 500 series but I've heard that they aren't good for motorised systems. Anyone heard anything about that or have experiense?

Trust1, just so I understood correctly, you now have the new receiver and the motor connected with one cable to the motor and then from the motor to the LNB without any problems?

Anyone else who have another idea or can confirm Trust1? Just don't want to buy a new dreambox and then have it destroyed by the motor or something like that (or buying a dreambox that is too weak for running motorised systems).

Really thanks for your replies (and future replies), especially Trust1 if he/she is right!

I am not using that combination anymore , its replaced by a original motorized 120 cm Fibo Gregorian .
But at that time i did't have any trouble at all .
A friend of mine (PaulVR) is using the same combination also without problems .

What about Dreambox ? I dont know !

All the stuff is still here (inside the house), but the motor is not in use .
As I told before , I replaced it with the motorized 120 cm Fibo gregorian dish on top of my house .
That is been steering by a Pace MSP 995 positioner .
On the back-wall is a 78 cm Triax with 4 lnb's for sats on 28.2º (single) / 19.2º (quad) / 13º (twin) and 5º (single) east .
With a lot of cables and switches I can connect every lnb to any receiver .

My receivers are : still the same Nokia 9500 , Nokia d-box 1 , Nokia d-box 2 , Maxplus 2100S and a Philips DSX 6063 .
Non of them are placed in the living room but all in my hobby room .

My soldering iron is smoking all the time .

I'm having the similar nightmares that you are also experiencing! I have Clone DM500 and recently last week tried to set up a Motek 1200A H-H motor. things did not go as well as I hoped, and now I think I'm in the same position as yourself....burned out 2 LNB's and also worried about the condition of my Satellite boxes voltage outputs. Now i'm just waiting to be able to purchase 2 new LNBs to try out again. However I think the problem was caused by the DM500 Clone box and the power peaking as you prognosed in above posts. Therefore I now have the H-H motor feed coming from one of my other satellite boxes (X-Cruiser 250) and will ONLY use this Sat box to rotate the motor. Now i ALSO have a second cable from my DM500 Clone box DIRECTLY to the LNB. In this way i hope that i can avoid the power spikes and therefore not burn out any more LNB's. It will mean having to switch AV inputs to be able to monitor the satellite and motor movements and then toggle back to the DM500 to decode and watch the channels.

Trust1,

That picture looks like a heavily modified Motek set-up.....! Do you have any step by step guide on the addition of the 3rd F connector and 15V supply that you refer to in your post above?

Thanx for any help / tips.
