My System: MSS500 Pace Positioner Panasonic Viera 42" Plasma
Complete Beginner, Problem with Positioner

My dad has a motorised satellite set up to Receive Hotbird as he likes to receive Italian telly. He has just bought a new Panasonic Viera and would also like to use it to receive Freesat.

I have no idea how to accomplish this, can anybody offer some advice?

His current set-up is a PACE MSS500 used as a positioner only, linked to a ID Digital CI-20E as his receiver. It would appear to me that the dish itself has had it's positioning feature locked, but this is really only a guess.

Any ideas appreciated.

Hello

Welcome to the forum activmariner

Not sure what you mean by locked.... you mean physically with a bar?

You would simply drive the dish using the MSS to 28.2 degrees and then select the Astra 2 option from the ID digital menu and scan for channels assuming of course that Astra 2 is one of the satellites shown in the menu. I would suggest the easiest way is to set up the receiver for a freesat channel by looking here then drive the mss to 28.2 which is Eastwards from Hotbird, then when a signal appears on built in signal meter, which I think your stb has (the model before mine) then scan for all channels or just unencrypted ones.
