Can lnbs die slowly?

Good Morning.

I have just installed a new motor to my 80cm comag dish, and the
strength is around 70plus%,quality varies from Turksat at 85% to hispasat at 40%, all channels are watchable.

The picture became rough on my comag silvercrest 5 yrs old,I upped the contrast and then colour, both were set previous at 50%,however the picture was very very grainy, I played around with the skew etc but no better, so thought as did swmbo that the old comag is dying,so looked at technomates, the choice is endless.

Had a thought when I got up,could it be the lnb its one of those chinese
0.1 types with a red face and green body, paid £10 three yrs ago from a dealer in London.

Got out the original which is a comag 0.5 put it on the dish arm and low and behold perfection, so the comag remains.

Question can lnbs die slowly, must say the motor got zapped by a flashover near by, it would turn on 18 volts one way, but the comag
and lnb worked I had removed the f conector from the comag prior knowing that lightening can jump a few inches from the F conector so placed it out of the way.

Curious, I also wonder about the merits of 0.1 lnbs although mine seemed to drag in a stronger picture when new.

My System: Pace Sky HD, DM7000s, CubeRevo 3000HDPVR, Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Televes H45 Digital Spectrum analyser.

Any problems with the picture quality like graininess or lack of colour depth will not be the LNB, LNB problems will manifest themselves as pixellation or signal lock dropping in and out or completely.

Bob, you and I bought those brightly coloured "0.1dB" LNBs at the same time, if I recall correctly!

Mine is working fine still - although a couple of weeks ago I thought it had lost gain towards the top of the Band and changed it for a Golden Interstar 0.2dB.

This made no difference (actually the replacement was slightly worse!) and I have since found that the root of the problem is the Tuner sensitivity of my shiny new Foxsat HD.

In any event, the symptoms you describe don't relate to LNB performance and I suspect not to your Receiver either (remember this is Digital, not Analogue).

Have you considered the possibility of a dying Telly ...................

Or problematic SCART lead

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness"

My System: andrews dish - jaeger 1224 motor, vantage x221tsci, skystar 2, diablo v2.3, cyfra+

yes using a good quality scart lead will improve things and also make sure you have rgb set in the video settings on your receiver
