how to set this up: diseqc + splitter

Hello everyone..

My dish wiring looks like:

a single LNB -> dish with diseqc motor -> 4-way-splitter ---> receiver A and receiver B

So the splitter is after the diseqc.
The signal wire starts at LNB, goes thru the diseqc, then finish at the splitter. Then two wires go out from the splitter to the two receivers.

Receiver A is a FTA dumb thing.
Receiver B is a Dreambox 500.

I just got the Receiver B, and I am not sure if this cabling is correct. Should I get a dual-LNB for example, and remove the signal splitter, and wire Receiver B directly to the second port of the dual LNB? Or would this work as it is?

I am trying to understand what you want to achieve. If you have a motorised dish then only one receiver should control the motor. The fact that you have two receivers and a splitter makes it complicated in my opinion.

I can suggest the following:

A dual lnb to hook up to the second receiver, ie. the one port of the lnb goes via the motor to receiver 1(Dreambox), and the second port on the lnb to receiver 2(FTA Unit).

This will work but you have to consider that the channels you wish to view will have to be on the same satellite as the dish is pointed to. In simple terms, if you select a channel on the Dreambox which controls the motor and you are now positioned on Turksat for example, if you are watching channel-x, you cannot expect to receive signals from another satellite on your FTA unit - but you will be able to watch via your FTA receiver channel-y that is available on Turksat, meaning that you will be able to have two different channels active on the two televisions.

Alternatively, you can keep the current LNB and maybe loop through from the 'LNB out' on one receiver to the 'LNB in' on the other. What you need to remember once again is that only one receiver should be set for "motorised antenna" and the other should be set to "fixed antenna".

As for the splitter, I am not sure why you have that in the configuration.

I am not an expert on this, but this is the way/s I would think possible.

Indeed, I'll probably end up getting a dual LNB and doing what you suggested - - the LNB OUT route is difficult because the two receivers are one floor apart from each other..

I would throw away the splitter.


How you connect it depends on your priorities.

If you want both receivers to have full access to all channels at the same time (eg record one channel while watching another) on the satellite that the dish is pointing to then a twin LNB is the best way to go, with one receiver controlling the motor.

However, if you only want to use one receiver at a time, or are happy with the 2nd receiver having limited access, then you can use the loopthrough.

With the loopthrough, both receivers would be able to control the motor, while the other one is turned OFF.

I had a similar scenario a while back 1 motorised dish that I wanted to be able to control independantly from two different recievers,1 in living room and 1 as test station in garage, adding loopthrough from living room was too difficult, so I ran new feed from garage and kept existing from living room, I then used a power pass 2 way splitter before my motor, as long as one reciever was off I was able to control the motor from either box.

Crude method and Not the best practice, but did work well for my needs

I have a similar setup and have a dual lnb, One reciever controls the motor and the other feeds direct from the lnb. I also have a fixed dish for 28e which is the most used which feeds both recievers and a sky box. So

Reciever 1 TM500 - motor control of td110 + 28e (when I get the settings right)
Reciever 2 Fortec - 2nd feed from td110 + 28e
Reciever 3 Sky box - 28e

I found this works best for me.

I've booted up, I've patched in, I'm online, offline, downloaded and extremely cheesed off!

Many thanks for all the suggestions. Here is what I ended up doing:
I replaced the LNB with a dual one, got rid of the splitter.
I connected diseqc motor to dreambox, and the old FTA receiver straight to the other leg of the LNB.. Now the old FTA is kinda slave to dreambox it cannot turn the satellite back.. No problem! It works!
