want to leave sky and join freesat, but also get hotbird pls help

Hi Guys
Havnt been on forums for a number of years,i go back as far as d2mac and tv 1000.Any way is there someone out there that can help me make a decision.I am a sky subscriber not HD,i only have the basic package with broadband,no movies,i think i pay £23 a month, and i only really watch the discoverys, wife watches living,so i dont really need much,i want to get the new foxsat HDR ,but i want to recieve freesat,FTA SKY and i want to make the most of the fabulous reciever so i,d like to get hotbird to,the equipment i have is

standard sky digibox
standard sky dish
1 LNB
LG 50"HD 1080DP TV
LG 350HD DVD recorder

i would really like to no the best and hassel free way to recieve the above using the new foxsat.with either using some of my existing equipment or disgarding some of it or all of it,i plan on fitting it myself so thats why i,m asking for the most straight forward way to go.i,m willing to pay a little more money for less hassel setting i t up,as i had so much grief many years ago trying to set a disqu on sky and hotbird.

Any replies to this thread are very much appreciated

many thanks

Hi, you have two options, both relatively easy, but one easier than the other, but both require a Diseqc switch or two.

Either get another Sky dish, and install it for hotbird, then feed from both dishes into a Diseqc switch(es) and into the the Foxsat.

Or get a larger dish, say 80cm, align it to Hotbird and put a 2nd LNB on for 28E. The Triax TD78 with multiblock would be suitable for this, but there are other dishes to use as well.

The reason I say diseqc switch(es) is because the HDR is a twin tuner and you may want to have both tuners switchable between satellites if the software allows.

I'm pretty sure that Diseqc switching is posible using the HDR, but you have to go into a secret menu for multisat, using red, green, yellow, blue, red, green, yellow, had one working OK on a motor.

My System: Motorised setup 68cm penta digit 45e - 30w

two dish option could be the best as it would be cheap and easy

My understanding was the PVR functions will not work in non-freesat mode.

not to worried about recording hotbird from foxsat

Thanks guys

Regarding the PVR on the foxsat, with hotbird, lets say i will use my LG dvd with built in hard drive to record from Hotbird as there seems to be so many issues as to if it is possible to record from 3rd party satalites, that really isnt an issue for me,i,m happy just to have the equipment set up to record from freesat, and if possible sky,if i cant record from sky its not the end of the world for me,but i would like to record hotbird from my dvd HD recorder,DOES THIS SIMPLIFY the equipment and set up atall? thinking of buying and installing this week as i have a week of work

Many Thanks

I think the thing to try is to feed 28E to both inputs on the HDR from a quad LNB.

But put a Diseqc switch in the tuner 1 feed so that Hotbird can be switched in. Use Diseqc pos1 or A for the 28E feed.

All should work well in Freesat mode, with no intervention.

When you want Hotbird, go to non Freesat mode and watch it via that. You may be able to record but I suspect not as Huevos says, but you'll find out.
