My System: Screwfix kit
No signal - Satellite finder howls constatly

Apologies if this is an FAQ. I'm new to satellite stuff, I've just got hold of the screwfix elcheapo kit and a Labgear satellite finder. Dish is now on wall, pointing (hopefully) in approximately the right direction and about 23 degrees from vertical. Adding the meter in line, I just get a constant howling if the sensitivity control is turned up at all, and it doesn't change if I move the dish. If the howling is turned off, there are no apparent peaks of signal as I rotate the dish. The receiver shows a signal strength of about 70%, but zero quality, and it doesn't change with dish azimuth.

Meter problem or something worse? Any hints please!

My System: Triax 1.1m and Orbital 80cm Motorised Dishes. Various fixed Dishes. Eclectic selection of Digital and Analogue Receivers. Complex switching and distribution that SWMBO cannot fathom. Nor me.

Well I think you have been misled about how to set Elevation for an Offset Dish!

The Dish face should be more or less vertical - the LNB arm is offset by 22 to 26 degrees depending upon exact make/model, so Dish Face should be within a gnat's of zero.

So you are shooting thousands of miles over the Satellites ...........

Correct the Elevation and try final alignment again

As regards Azimuth, this is useful:

Strength 70, Quality Zero is just the quiescent reading consistent with your Receiver being connected to an LNB.

If you point the Dish at the ground or remove the LNB from the Dish, you'll get the same reading.

What you are looking for is an upswing in "Strength" and a commensurate upswing in Quality. Adjust for highest Quality. Don't forget to tweak LNB Skew after you've got the Alignment correct.

My System: Zone1, DSI8215 SkyHD, Thomson DSI4214, TF5000CI, Dreambox DM800 HD PVR - Nab BH0.12, TM-5200D, Gibertini 104cm, SNH-031, 36v Actuator, Vbox-II, 42°E to 30°W, Sling Media, Televes H45 Digital Processing Analyser, Satlook Micro+G2 NIT, Rover SDM 1s

Moved to dish set up section.

As said correct the elevation of the dish. In case the El markings are not accurate, the dish should be about vertical or at 90 degrees to the ground -roughly.

My System: Screwfix kit

A genius Tivu. IQ at least 200, worked straight away. I got the satellite-next-door so my aim was a little out, but a slight tweak to the dish, and more channels than soft mick popped up.

I wonder how screwfix got the instructions so bad? I suppose that takes another sort of genius.
