My System: Humax Foxsat HD PVR B&O 32 RF Avant (better than some HD TV's) Full link System. 2PC'S One XP & Lappy, Vista
Question Help, need advice & new dish????

Please can someone help me? I am very new to Satellite TV (well sort of) I have had a Sky + set up for the last few years, but now have canceled the contract and gone Freesat with a Humax Foxsat PVR. My problem is, and I know what everyone will say, I am using the existing very cheap & nasty Sky dish. I want to upgrade to a better dish and LNB. As I intend to flee the country next year to Spain I want to buy the kit that will work in both locations. I think I need a 65cm dish but am unsure about anything else.

Please help or at least recommend someone in West Cornwall.

Thanks' Philip.

If you are only interested in viewing FTA channels on Astra 2, 28.2E, then you don't need another dish, if you want to update to a motorized setup then by all means look for someting like the Penta 85cm dish, but it's not worth buying anything, to use in Spain, until you get there and know what size dish is required for your new location.
I have also moved your thread from the installer wanted section so that you can get advice on what you need before requesting an installer.

My System: Triax 1.1m and Orbital 80cm Motorised Dishes. Various fixed Dishes. Eclectic selection of Digital and Analogue Receivers. Complex switching and distribution that SWMBO cannot fathom. Nor me.

Indeed.

The Dish size you will ultimately require in Spain depends not only upon your approx. intended location, but possibly your precise intended location.

eg Catalunya towards Pyrenees perhaps 60cm, but elsewhere anything up to mammoth proportions.

Whereabouts are you going in Spain?

And, just to confirm what has already been said, there is nothing at all to be gained by changing a working UK dish for 28E.

Thank you for the response Mickah & Tivu. To answer your points, I will be re-locating to Aragon, about two hours in land from Barcelona. I know that I will need a 65cm dish as this is what everyone else has in the area.

I would like to replace the very very cheap Sky dish as the one I have is starting to fall apart and is a little flimsy.

I am also having reception problems with some channels, particularly the higher numbered ones (Euronews to name but one)

I would also like to, if possible receive Spanish, German & French channels as well.

I am not terribly clued up as to what comes from each satellite, and even how many there are up there.

Thanks' for the help and if anyone knows of an installer I could talk to in West Cornwall I would be most grateful.

Thanks' again, Philip

Aragon - lovely part of Spain.

I suggest, given your comments about the state of your present UK dish, that you get yourself an 80/88cm Dish and new Universal LNB.

The thing is, these are more than adequate for UK reception from 28E, and you'll more or less guarantee it'll also do the job in Aragon.

As regards which other Satellites you need to get Spanish, French, German, that depends upon whether you want Free To Air or intend to get Subscriptions.

French FTA Digital is best on 5W, but you won't get that using the same fixed Dish you use for 28E, even with a multi-LNB bracket.

But there are French Pay Packages on Hotbird at 13E.

Some Spanish FTA (mainly News and Regional Promos) on Hotbird also.

German mainly on Astra 1 at 19.2E.

All in all, you might be best getting an 80/88cm Dish and a DiSEqC Motor as this will give you a great deal of flexibility. And it should perform just as well in Aragon.

Edit: Just checking back, a Penta Dish has been suggested. I think that would do the job very nicely indeed.

A big THANK YOU Tivu, will now go and try to find out about DiSEqC (?) motors and get a bigger dish. Just hoping that all this will not cost too much, though since I am using it in Aragon (for your info, around Nonaspe near the Mare D'Aragon) the money will be well spent.

Thanks again, Philip.
