My System: One dish currently pointing at Astra 28E. Comag receiver to one tv. Want to connect as well to France Telecom (Orange) using Thomson box to either Hotbird 6 13E or Atlantic bird 5W ,which are the only options given on the menu.
Cannot receive UK FTA channels but others ok.

A friend of mine has just installed a satellite system in France pointing at Astra 28 E. He can receive lots of foreign channels but although the names of the UK. FTA channels come on screen it says ' No signal'.
His TV and receiver work fine when connected to my dish 3 miles away.
Has he a problem with his LNB?. He bought the system in France a year or two ago but has only just installed it.

Have a read in the Freesat section, the answer will be in there.

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness"

My System: Sky UK. FTA analogue & digital satellite from 6 fixed dishes (5E/7E/9E/10E/13E/16E/ 19E/23E/28E) Pace MSS100, Echostar IP3000VA, Technomate TM-1000D, Dreambox 7020S

The last noble sat warrior to fly the olden flag of Analogue

The dish is almost certainly aligned onto the wrong satellite.

My System: Triax 1.1m and Orbital 80cm Motorised Dishes. Various fixed Dishes. Eclectic selection of Digital and Analogue Receivers. Complex switching and distribution that SWMBO cannot fathom. Nor me.

Indeed. Odds on he's aligned it to 19.2E, not 28E.

A little tweak required ..............

Thanks for your quick response guys. (Best satellite forum on the web)
He has had the dish in 1001 positions but I think I will go and give it a nudge myself. On the bottom of his t.v. screen it does say Astra 2A 2B along with whichever station (BBC1 etc,)which I assume it received from the scan.
His receiver is an ELAP which probably is not the OEM?

Foolishly I did not have lightening protection on the mains feed to my Comag receiver and yes, when I returned from holiday it had been fried.
In a rush to get the t.v. working for the sprog I bought a ELAP Thalis V from the local DIY shed. Does anyone know the OEM of this box or any useful info regarding it?

The lists of Channels by Satellite are probably pre-stored and are just data tables which can be re-labelled and edited at will. They are only of value for registering what you actually can receive, not what you think you ought to.

Frequencies are re-used on different Satellites, so if your Dish is on Astra 1 but you try to select your Astra 2 listings on the box you won't get the results you expect!

If your box has a blind/auto scan feature, activate it: Then you'll get some actual Channels and we can confirm which Satellite you are actually aligned to (I suspect only a scan of the pre-stored list has been done so far).

Bottom line: Move dish about 9 degrees further to the East and don't forget to depress the elevation by a couple of degrees. Once you've got the correct Satellite, adjust the skew (rotation in it's holder) of the LNB for best results on both Horizontally and Vertically polarised Channels.

Well we tried moving the dish to no avail. Moved back to the original 28E position re-scanned blind and on BBC, ITV etc are getting signal and quality in 80s but no picture or sound. Foreign channels OK.
As I mentioned before his t.v. and receiver work ok on my dish.
Could it be a problem with his LNB? This (apart from the dish position and cabling) are the only untried factors.

Can you please post some of the channels you're currently getting, and their frequencies, it will help to find out which satellite you're pointed at.

The principle still applies - you are quite definitely on the wrong Satellite and need to go further East and Down: This time persevere until you do find the correct Satellite.

You haven't gone back to 28E at all - what you've done is go back to the Receiver's 28E Data Table and the original incorrect Dish alignment.

As said, list some Channels you do get when scanning the Satellite you are actually on using the 28E Data Table and we can tell you exactly which Satellite you are really on and advise how far to move the Dish to get the correct one

Hi again,

From our previous discussion.

My friend has showing on Astra 2A2B Phoenix on 10744 and Bellsat on10733. What satellite is he actually pointed at?
Also on 2A2B France 24 and Russia Today but he has texed these as both being on 10744 ?

He also can get BBC World and Sky News Showing as Astra 1C

Thanks for your patience.
You may just about save his sanity - stuck in a caravan in the middle of France with a wife and 2 kids in Winter with no t.v.

As predicted, all those Channels are from Astra 1 at 19.2E.

Please reassure yourself by looking here _http://www.flysat.com/astra19.php

Also as predicted, given that you are ascribing these channels to 2A, 2B or whatever, you can now clearly see that what you are scanning is simply a table that has no meaning unless put into context!

Bottom line: As previously Posted, move Dish nine degrees further to the East and depress the Elevation two or three degrees.

You will win!

Edit: Typo on your part: Belsat is on 10773, not 10733. Had me going for a bit there!

My System: TM 7655 & Pace Digibox with FREESAT from Sky card 85 cm mesh dish with twin lnb in Corfu. LG 32LF7700 FREESAT TV with SELFSAT-H10D Flat Antenna Twin LNB, Pace Sky Box, HUMAX PVR 9200T in Norfolk

Phoenix is on Astra 1M 10744 at 19.2', as people keep telling you point it at 28' (from behind the dish move it to the left as previously described) and Bob should be your uncle.

Edit - Must learn to type as fast as Tivu
