C/Ku band reception in Brazil

Hi, I have a cousin in Brazil and hes about to get a satellite sistem and would like to have a better idea on what to buy. I've been searching a bit on some of the brazilian sat shops and found that they sell a lot of C band stuff and they don't seem to be top noch, then again I know nothing about C band...

So first of all the receiver that is available to him is this fantabulastic analogic+digital C/Ku band + positioner named Visiontec VT4000A.

It will have an offset 1.5m dish with no motor, and thats all he knows. The guy that's going to sell and install the lot doesn't seem to know all that much, from what my cousin says.
So I'm asking for a bit of help on this. What do I really need for a working sistem pictures would be apreciated!

Btw heres the (old) sly brazilian box.

And here is the nicest receiver ever built

My System: Sky+, DB 7000s, Gemini 4.3 in flash, Var on USB stick. Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Unaohm EP313, Swires Annie 204 Spectrum, Rover ST-4 Spectrum.

I would give the Visiontec a miss if it is true that it only has a 1000 channel memory.

Not really too conversant with what can be received down there, is he planning a multi LNB setup?

Hi thanks for the reply.
the guy just wants the most basic stuff to get RTPI, go figure... Besides that they can only get some 6 positions and some 200 channels to choose from, most of them homebrew the rest are spanish speaking thingys.

I been to a few sites but info on brazilian reception is hard to find or I might be looking in the wrong place.
Anyway that piece of crap receiver is the best bet right now since they don't have any european or american brands on sale afaik. Basicly its all brazilian made and look and feel like crap. They have these C band mesh antennas of up to 2.4m costing 80€, imagine the quality of the beast.

What I would like to know is a few things about the lnb and polorizer. I had an old irte magnetic polorizer and was easy to undestand how to plug it and make it work. But hese C band lnbs, corrotors, polorizers are just too confusing for me. They just look really strange.

Example, i saw this one twin lnb that looked like it didn't need a polorizer, similar to an universal Ku lnb with builtin feed all in metal. the there are these sort of tubes that need a feed and a square lnb on the side?! Too confusing for me. To top it off, they all need two wires to power the damn thing like the magnetic polerizer I had, and as you know most receivers dont use any separate polorizer since they use universal lnbs.

just as a side note, the best lnbs I found on brazilian online stores were the sharp 0,7db for ku band, and I even saw some 1,2db ones!!! What the heck!

Although it may seem cheap to us Europeans, 80EUR is definitely not cheap for Brazilians - in real terms it is more like 225EURs to them, in that it is at least couple of weeks' wages. Nor does it mean that it is low quality - over here in the first world we pay way over the odds for goods that are a fraction of the cost elsewhere for exactly the same item made in the same factory...

I understand your point and agree to most of it and feel that for the most parts of latin america having a satelite dish is mainly for enthusiasts. But seeing that the components found on online shops, that are supposed to be top noch, are using tecnology we had 5/7 years ago makes me believe that the rest isn't all that much different. Only subscription tv, sky brasil, have the latest in digital receivers and as you pointed out it's not for the masses, the price is very similiar to what we pay in europe.

Anyway, still can't figure out how to put a C band system together having Ku band aswell.
