Damping Dishes against noise

Has anyone tried damping dishes to cut down the motor noise.

You could try putting sand in the pole to stop that resonating.

My System: Sky+, DB 7000s, Gemini 4.3 in flash, Var on USB stick. Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Unaohm EP313, Swires Annie 204 Spectrum, Rover ST-4 Spectrum.

Yes and I believe that one of our members has put some type of polymer foam coating on the back of their dish as well.

I have tried the sand idea on my telescope mount which was quite sucessful, so I might try that.
I guess the polymer foam would work quite well too, I had thought of putting foam rubber between the dish and the bracket to decouple it.
Trouble is my daughter winges if I move my dish at night.

Why is that clive surely you don't make her go outside and move it in this type of weather?

How about lubrication??

Molybdenum Disulphide is an example, as that is used mainly in the steering rack, suspension arm joints, driveshaft gaiters and the King-pins on a Citroen 2CV & it's derivatives...

This just makes it move more freely it doesnt stop the noise being transmitted. If you tap your dish it will ring due to the shape, so it is a great noise transmitter.

If she's old enough, tell her "If you don't like it, get your own house!!!", if not, buy her a set of earplugs...

My System: Topfield 5800 Echostar3000,DB7000, Relook 400S, Humax HDC2000, 55cm Fibo Gregorian dish with waveguide and Motek 2100 mod, 90cm Fibo Gregorian dish, 120cm Fibo Gregorian dish on a 1224 motor with waveguide

I have experimented a little with this sort of solution. Unfortunately any sort of flexible coupling between dish and mount can cause the dish to flap about in the wind, and also, if using a disqc motor with usals, the off centre weight of the dish when angled, causes some extra unwanted deviation.

On my Fibo dishes I remove the backing support and re-attach it with a polyurerthane adhesive, ( windscreen adhesive is ideal ). This gives some damping to the dish but is quite stiff. I then spray the back of the dish with sound deadening material of the sort used on cars. I also fill any poles with concrete where practical.

It is difficult to reduce the noise very much, but I have found that this method reduces the high pitched whine considerably.

Oh I must remember that for when my daughter flies the nest. My son has already gone and made it quite plain at the time he would not be back under any circumstances. It's nice to have grateful children

Here's a good tip, when she next moves out, do something to her bedroom, like extend the bathroom, turn it into a "satellite monitoring station", or just fill it with as much junk as you can...

As for me, I moved out of my mum's house well over a year ago, and cleverly, she sold the house so I can't go back at all...

Glad I have a couple of tents!!!

Re. Damping
When I said rubber in the joint I was thinking of 1.5mm which should flatten to nothing, but still help.
Concrete in the tube might be extreme, I suppose I could foam it.
I will have a play with the dish when the bits arrive.
Cor this could have been on TV as the UPS man has just arrived with the bits and they all fit this time.
New idea, squirt silicone sealant between the dish and the bracket.
Re- Daughter
She has more junk than me and that is a fair task. Her Mum has been doing all her washing and ironing, plus she makes her sandwiches.
Theres no hope.

Clive
dear oh dear....

I do hope she pays rent & board for all that service, seeing how she's old enough to rent her own home and do everything herself...

When I was in my mums house I bought my own food (and mostly cooked it myself) & washed my own clothes and all that, and in return for the rent, I basically kept the house "together" as it was beginning to fall apart (one example was the 5-light cheapo chandelier nearly falling on me when moving a materess that my brother's friend put in the dining room, it literaly swung once, then landed on the floor with a crash!!! I replaced it with a sensible single Pendant light)...

How old is she by the way?

An accountant yet she has no money??!?!? She's in the wrong business!!!

Oh, I had a thought about dish dampening, and going back to when I used a fleece jacket to disguise my indoor 80cm before I painted it, the jacket was good at dampening the resonance when I flicked it now and then. Maybe you could sticking a fleece sheet or something onto the back?
