Linear actuater

I have a prime frocus dish which was previously motor driven. The linear actuator is still attached ( the green rod in the picture). Are there any reasons to keep it in place or can it be removed ?P2030083.JPG

If you are using the dish in a fixed position you'll need some form of dish locking bracket to centre it in relation to the mount if you are going to remove the actuator, as it will be set at some arbitrary position as it stands.

...on the other hand, if you are able to screw/unscrew the actuator piston, you could leave it on, screw it in or out and refix it after centering the dish.

If the actuator has no slack you can leave it on. Just use a 12V car battery charger to drive it to the desired position. That is what I did before I got myself a 36V positioner. Even though the motor has a rated voltage of 36V it will run nice and slow on 12V.

PS.

Swap + and - to change the direction of movement.

There is some slack and because of this the dish moves in gusts of wind. I've already found the satellite I'm looking for (Astra 2D) but I'm looking to solve the movement problem.
