Noise from DiseqC motor

hi again guys,

I have a diseqc motor, the typical 40 pound type.

works like a dream, no problems. However I have a minor problem.

My setup is situated on the wall of my downstairs flat. Although the sound of the motor is not a problem for me, the neighbour upstairs has noted this.

My question is this....is there anyay I can reduce/absorb the sound of the motor? I was thinking of even wrapping sponge around it??

ooh and before anyone suggests....moving the dish somewhere else is out of the question.

Thanks in advance guys

lol i have the same problem with the noise but my neighbours arn't complaining about it just its abit loud, the only decent thing about noise is you can hear how far its turned. seems to me like you have same motor also lol this is strange you have same sort of dish as me, same sort of receiver, same sort of motor and live near me lol.

Anyways i dont think wrapping something around it will help because it has to turn according to what stellite you are on, maybe you could enclose the part that turns in some sort of sound proof box with a circular hole in the top to allow the pole to go through.

It could work but abit tricky to do cos you would have to take it all apart just to enclose it that way. Another option is to buy a new low noise motor, but what i said is a suggestion which could work with abit of effort.

My System: Sky+, DB 7000s, Gemini 4.3 in flash, Var on USB stick. Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Unaohm EP313, Swires Annie 204 Spectrum, Rover ST-4 Spectrum.

You can fill the mast with sand to sound deaden it, stick adhesive foam on the back of the dish will also prevent some of the reverberation and as you say, a thick foam jacket over the motor will help.

You may also be able to wrap the wall mounting with some sound deadening material.

Most of us have this problem to some extent.

Whilst some motors are undoubtably quieter than others, they are all coupled to a large resonant loudspeaker type cone, damping material on the back of the cone can usually reduce the more annoying high freq. content. I have experimented a bit with a variety of things and have ended up using the type of stuff used on car body panels. Can't recall who, but at least one member got good results with expanding foam on the back.

I put my sleeping pillow as temporary at the back of the dish, it reduced the noise much but not enough.

I have huge problems with this also as i use my motor during the late night early morning hours.

As my neighbor has their bedroom above my dish and they have the balcony door open during night you can imagine how much it annoys them.

In a spray m8, wear some gloves and mould it as you spray, spray very gently, cut off any excess when dry, best of luck,

deep joy
