dreambox outside home.

ok i know somebody asked about this the other day but i just want to double check something.

It appears in my router that i can create new ports, however i cannot seem to be able to forward a port to another port, i.e. say port 2121 to port 21, my router will not let me do that.

the thing i wanted to know is about the http, say i am round a friends house, is it ok to forward http port 80 to my box? i'm assuming this is a real bad idea since it's all devices main internet port which is why i didn't do it. If i shouldn't use port 80 then how do i forward to my dreambox on a different port so i can access it through web browser?

As i say i can create new port rules in my router, but i cannot seem to forward a port to another port as somebody suggested.

I could use ftp on port 21 (again not a good idea) but i can change the password over from default to protect myself.

My router is an addon router, not a well known make, is the anything in the box itself i can do to change the listen port of the login? if i can do that i can just forward that port to my box.

thanks and hope somebody can get back to me on it, i am not here this weekend so any replies before 4pm would be great :-).

My System: Hotbird (13E) - Dreambox DM-600PVR, DM-500+, WinXP.

Better change the http port on your DB:

Blue Panel > Expert setup > Communication setup > HTTP port.
Setup your router, to send requests for that port, to the (inside your LAN) IP of the DB.
From your friend, in order to reach the http interface of your DB, you have to type: 'http://your_home's_public_IP:Port' where Port is the Port you have setup above.
If you have subscribed in a dyndns service, replace the "your_home's_public_IP" with your domain name.

Unfortunatelly, it seems to be complicated to change the ftp port in your Box. Pls see relative posts in this forum.

greetings

If he were not a wizard, from head down to the root, you would have got to worry-your DB only boots

What are you trying to access on your Dreambox using a web browser?

If you router doesn't support public and private ports you can only use the ones available to you. If you want to browse it on port 1234 then you need to change the http port on your Dreambox to 1234.

Also, technically you're not creating ports you're opening them.

ok, sorry about the long delay i have been away this weekend.

Erm i have set my box up on port 80 in the browser but i changed my password so that nobody will hack in.

As for FTP, i forwarded port 21 to my box, i even forwarded a FTP Server (which turned out to be the same thing), i went to my dns address in the browser but i got nothing.

everything is set up in the same way and it will not let me in. I'll have to sort that one out me thinks.

anyways thanks for the advice dudes/ettes

What's your question again?

i went to my dns address in the browser but i got nothing.
You have dyndns account? Are you trying to access the IP address from inside the network? Some routers that use NAT won't let you do this.

Example.

In your router you forward port 21 and port 80 to your Dreambox IP address.

You set up a dyndns account (not needed if you have fixed IP address) e.g. sharkadder.dyndns.org

In a web browser on a PC from another house you enter:

Code:
http://sharkadder.dyndns.org
And you should see the web interface. Play with the ports and you can see CCcam. If you see the login to your router than port forwarding isn't working.

In an FTP program create a new connection, setting sharkadder.dyndns.org as the host.

the port 80 (HTTP) is working, i got a mate to check it outside my network because i get loopback from within my own home.

as for port 21 still nothing, i forwarded port 21 to my dreambox ip, i kept the subnet mask as 255.255.255.255 because my router put this as default and wouldn't let me change it.

I told him to check my FTP address and still wouldn't work, my port 80 been working with my dns since friday evening so i was told.

I'll have to have a fiddle, maybe my router or box needs resetting.

EDIT

canyouseeme says the port is open, maybe i'll have to see my mate to check again when he comes back later, but looks like it's not the forwarding which is the issue

The subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0 (or even 255.0.0.0)

Try ftp://yourAccountName.dyndns.org

I was prompted for a username and password (I removed the FTP address that you posted but tried it for this post).

na i am not prompted for one, i have just tested it outside my home now, the HTTP is working a treat and i have that as 255.255.255.255 for subnet mask.

My router seems to like giving everything i forward that as default, will not let me change that value. You say it asked you for a username and password? my http does but not the ftp.

I tried all sorts of combinations like ftp:// ftp. etc.

When i get in i will look at my router again, it probs just need a good reboot to be honest.

Solved problem

Hi, it's lucky i have been reading up on a few things to do with the dreambox accessing it remotely of late.

I forwarded port 21 to my dreambox on friday.

today i went into my browser and typed in ftp://mydns

no luck

so i tried these:

ftp.mydns
ftp://mydns:21
ftp://mydns:22

Still no luck, so i thought ok, i remember reading somewhere you can type in your username and password in the browser and gain access that way, so i tried this:

ftp://username: password@mydns (without a space after the colon)

because the dreambox is linux i think that is why it wouldn't let me view it in windows explorer, but it worked!!!!!

it came straight up in list form, only downside was, when i changed directory i had to type it in manually in the address bar but when i went into my var/etc i didn't have to, it came straight up. That was probably a 1 off that i needed o type username and password in address bar again when switching folders.

Not sure why going to the address and for a login to appear doesn't work but that's a strange one.

So now i'm thinking, if my linux apache web server allows me to view in windows explorer, why won't my dreambox?

I then right clicked on my CCcam config, saved target as (in list view theres no copy and paste, nor can i upload back in that view once finished editing a file). the config file went onto my desktop, i opened it and all was good.

I tried connecting to my box via secureshell ftp and it wouldn't have it so now i need a way of dragging files back to my box, i'm sure i can soon get windows explorer working with the box though .

Some strange effects you have to agree.....hmmm

well i can now access ftp remotely so all is good .

EDIT

now working in windows explorer, the computer i am at didn't have "view ftp site in folder view" ticked in internet options lol.

My System: XSAT 430 Xcruiser 250 DM500S.....Flakey H-H Motek 2100A

I have been trying to get this DNS and port forwarding set-up on my Dreambox and home system. I think that i have managed to do this as per the information in the above posts. As I'm able to get the Dreambox web interface screen up when logging on from another PC.

However I'm not sure how to get my Routers DNNS function to work. I have enabled it and set my DNS user name and password in to it, however the "DNNS Status" always says "Please wait"......is there a way to ensure that this feature is working? Do i have to restart my router to drop the ISP IP and see if it picks up a new one and that my DNS address is automatically changed / forwarded?

Also as per the above advise I have change my Dreambox port 80 to a random number, is there any rules of thumb to be used when selecting another port number?

I have NOT used any of the following numbers:
FTP21
SSH22
Telnet23
SMTP25
Web80
Pop 3110
IMAP143

EDIT: forgot to say that i have also enabled DNZ for the time being, when can i know that the system is working without this feature?

Thanx for your helps.

You should change the password anyway unless you want your box compromised

I have follwed the advise and information from the previous posts, which included:

1) Changing my DreamBox password.
2) change the Port 80 to a random number.
3) Tried to enable my Router DDNS feature (Belkin Router).
4) Enabled the DNZ Router feature which basically take the Dreambox outside of the fire wall protection - temporay measure until i can get the feed back on the questions that i have asked in earlier post.

My questions now are:

1) does anyone know about the DNNS feature of the router and how it should work as I have tried to enable it but just says "HTTP cannot connected" on the status.

2) What Port number should i use instead of port 80, should it be a 3 or 4 digit number? Should it only be port 1234 as advised above by MHKU or can it be any number?

3) Should I forget the Router DDNS feature and install the Dreambox Pluggin that checks and updates the ISP IP address changes?

Thanx
