Creating images - advice

Hey, ok you lot probably won't know all that much about this, unless you have tried it yourself but it's worth a shot.

Basically for a project i'd like to be able to create my own image, i know theres a tutorial on it in the sticky but that's not creating own image, that's just about how to compress a file into image format, kinda a cheats way.

Does anybody know where i can get the open source for image creation which is currently available, and also what computer languages these are programmed in?

I'd like to be able to take template code or sample code and either write an image myself or modify some previous code for what i need. the image will be for a dreambox 500-s satellite receiver.

p.s. is they any simulators floating about for loading images on? Would seem rather stupid having to flash my box everytime i want to test a new feature out. I know i will need something like fedora or ubuntu on my pc aswell as windows for this.

As i say it is going to be for a programming project which i will begin properly in october but i want to know if it is possible to do since i can start looking into it now.

thanks, any step in right direction is appreciated, anybody who has created or been part of creating an image before, then a pm woulsd be great on what i need to do :-).

As great as this forum is, it's more of a user's forum rather than a place where dev's hang out. I think you'd get better info elsewhere, for example, _www.i-have-a-dreambox.com

Yeah, some developer got in touch with me, he's sorted me out on where to go for this sort of thing. It does look complex but i am usually a quick learner on thing's like this.

I hear a lot of the enigma 1 code is very sloppy indeed and at times very hard to make out what exactly you do need to edit. Another thing is theres currently no emulator available to test images on. So the only way is to flash the box everytime you want to test something. Enigma 2 code however is a lot more cleaned up, easier to understand, but i won't have a spare enigma 2 machine unfortunately to test it all out on.
