First Post - possible n00b question...

Hi,

First post so take it easy guys

I've read through some of the faq's etc and find that there is an absolute wealth of information with which i am left a little confused.

Basically, i have a sky box and therefore have the normal sky dish. I have it with the multiroom setup. I have no other dish installed.

I also have a 4meg broadband connection and a wireless router.

I have heard from a few people that it's possible to purchase a dreambox and obtain channels for free via a card share method. My question is, if I have the majority of channels on sky which I already pay for, then what extra channels do i get for free? Can i cancel my sky subscription and get those channels for free by card share? And, do i have to have an extra dish installed? A motorised dish? I guess the extra benefit of this is that I get extra channels which are 'flying about in the sky' ?

Also, does the broadband have to be active 24-7? I know that it normally is however ive had some problems with it lately. If the broadband comes slow or disconnected, do I lose my TV connection?

Hope i have provided as much info as possible and hope someone can help. I'm not looking for someone to spoon feed me (although it would be nice ) however even if pointing me towards the right direction would be nice.

Thanks

--Edit: I'd also like to add that the telly I have is capable of HDTV. I hav a HD Sky Box also but have recently cancelled my HD subscription due to cost cutting, however wouldn't mind them for free

Hello, only my third post so go easy on me too...

There is no such thing as totally 'free' card sharing - someone some where has got to have a paid subscription in order for them to 'share' it with you.

Usually how this works is Mr Smith shares his Sly UK card with Mr Schmidt who has the German package and Mr Rossi who has the Italian package. In order for all three to receive all the channels they will all need dish systems capable of receiving satellites at 28.2E, 19.2E and 13E.

Also people use this system to share a single card with several boxes in the same house.

There are 'pay' (i.e money changes hands) servers available but this activity is highly illegal and generally frowned upon by the satellite hobbyist comunity.

thanks. Basically i'm interested in A) Saving costs by reducing Sly subscription and B) Premiership footy which we don't get here ie. Some Setanta games (which I haven't got a subscription for) and Saturday 3pm games.

What would be the first step for me then?

Hello and welcome 5aq1b
There are quite a few questions here, I'll have a stab at answering a few.

Yes and no, its not just as simple as plugging it in and away you go. You'll need to read up on how to set up a card sharing server/client.

There are a few different approaches. You could pay to connect pay server(Not recommended).

You could get together with a few friends and buy a dreambox each and share one subscription.

Or lets say you have a sky card. You would share that with others who might have a card for some foreign package, they in turn share their card with you......which leads to the next question.

For the foreign packages, you would either need a motorized dish, or a big dish with a separate LNB for every sat you want to receive.

If your connection goes down, so does access to any servers you are receiving cards from, as does their access to your server/share.
Nobody will want to share with someone who isn't always online. Of course you'll be forgiven for the occasional down time that is outside of your control.

PS: You'll lose mulitroom unless you buy a dreambox for every room or a dreambox with an RF modulator (Which would only allow people in another room to view the currently active channel on the dreambox).

Keep reading, things will become clearer if you invest some time reading up.

Wait a month or two till people figure out whether CS will work with the new cards being issued by sky (Its not clear whether or not they will yet). In the meantime, read up on all you can.

Well

I would suggest you wait until the card swap that is taking place is finished as nobody knows for sure that card sharing will be possible once the card swap is finished and they switch on counter measures. This of course is assuming that the card swap is to stop card sharing which nobody would know apart from a sky employee

Pardon my ignorance but why is this not recommended? And also, why is this method 'frowned upon' by the card sharing community?

thanks. Has there been any counter measures before and have they stopped any sort of card sharing method from working?

If they had then nobody would be card sharing now..... It is really the only rational explanation for a multi million pound card swap on an encryption system that is still ostensibly secure apart from card sharing

I would have thought that not a lot will change yet. When all the cards have been swapped out then upgrades to the operating software can be done. Then things may be different.

Just my thoughts - so no shooting - LOL

I'd suspect you are right. Just because a few people have managed to share the new cards as it stands now, doesn't mean that things wont change once the rollout is complete and they start enabling features that disrupt sharing.

sorry to revive an old thread but has anything happened with regards to sharing being disrupted by the new Sly card rollout?

Does anyone have any idea how long this is planned to take? It seems like it's been going on for many months now, but I guess there are shed loads of Sly customers to contact.
