Xvid, DivX etc....

is it possible to play these files from the hard drive?

i have a few files, and at the moment i keep converting them to play them.... its a hassle i wish i could get round.

on top of that a few of the files go out of sync when converted

there must be a linux media player for this purpose?

Wink Fraid Not

It was tested but the processor of the dreambox is not up to the task.

To get around the problem I bought an Xbox and installed media centre onto it which plays all of my movies from a network share point.

The xbox was only £100 from Ebay.

btw, can you access the harddrive in your xbox from a pc (over ethernet)?
can you mount it in the DB with cifs/samba?
What software do you use in your xbox?

thanks!

thanks for your reply,
but I was refering to cifs/samba (Microsoft Shares).
for example: (change the ip, to the ip of your xbox) if you type :
\\192.168.0.3
in windows explorer, do you get the files in the xbox listed?
can you read/write to this shared directory?

thanks,

then the answer would have to be, i dont know??

now i have a question, what is CIFS/SAMBA

i take it its not a Brazilian dance then

at a guess... going off what you've said, it must be software that enables the Dreambox to view files at another IP address?
as i only have one lead from my PC through the floor down to the front room, i can only have the lead in one machine at a time.
i will be leaving this lead in the back of the Xbox, until the Dreambox needs updating, for now

Thumbs up Yes

You can map a drive to the Xbox - the Xbox can run Microsoft windows and a cutdown version of linux giving you full Samba functionality.

I run my xbox with media centre with the xbox mapping drives to my server where I keep my films/TV series/Music complete with all thumbnails for the films etc.

The quality is better using the Xbox to play movies as opposed to using a TV output card which is another reason for using the Xbox.

ok...
If you use windows (XP for example) and you click a directory with the right button, and you choose properties/sharing/network sharing, then that directory becomes shared your network.
if, on another pc, you enter the "\\192.168.0.3" in explorer (like I said in the previous post!!) you get the listing of the contents of the files you shared...
basically that's MS networking, also known as SAMBA...

after looking around the net, it seems anything your PC can play can be streamed to the Dreambox....
using VLC to play a divx for example, can be viewed on your TV, and you dont have to run between your PC and Dreambox either, starting and stopping play is done remotely from your Dreambox remote control

if someone has successfully done this, please help as i am still in the process of getting it to work.

A defender of the Remote Control Brigade, Sir R can flick channels faster than a Robben dive

for anyone wanting to try it heres a brief guide...

Tools needed

VLC media player http://www.videolan.org/
Neutrino DREAM image (best image due to a good movie player it has)
Multiboot menu on Dreambox

Using your favourite software install the Neutrino DREAM image onto your multiboot menu of the Dreambox as per usual

Boot the new image and press MENU on the remote control
Choose option 4 SETTINGS
Then choose NETWORK SETTINGS
Enter the following…

IP address this is the address of the Dreambox ie 192.168.0.10
Netmask 255.255.255.0
Broadcast 192.168.0.255
Default Gateway this is the address of your PC ie 192.168.0.1

Go back a screen by pressing EXIT on your remote
Go into MOVIE PLAYER and then SETTINGS set this up as follows

Streaming server IP this is the address of your PC ie 192.168.0.1
Streaming server port = 8080
DVD drive this is the drive letter of your DVD-Rom ie D:
Directory (VLC) this is the place where your files are ie C:\Movies

Go back a menu again and press the RED button to save the settings (I didn’t first time and had to type it all in again Doh!!)

Now onto the PC side of things…

Install VLC then even if you already have a shortcut on the desktop, create a new shortcut and call it DB Stream or whatever you like.

Now right click the icon and choose properties
In the target box enter
"C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --extraintf=http
making sure that’s the path to your VLC program (you may have installed it somewhere else)
apply that and then click OK
run VLC from that new icon..
click on file then streaming wizard.

Step 1
Click open then browse and choose a movie file (any, you don’t have to play only this file, you can choose a different one from the DB remote later)
Choose a file and open it then click OK

Step 2
Click choose
Click the tick box next to HTTP and enter
IP address (the IP address of your Dreambox) ie 192.168.0.10
Port 8080
Click OK

Step 3
Click start

If your wanting to play a DVD on the dreambox put one in your DVD-Rom now…

That’s the PC side of things sorted…. Back to the dreambox

With the Neutrino DREAM image loaded press menu and goto
the movie player.
To play a DVD press the yellow button (DVD)
To play DivX, Xvid, Avi etc etc choose the RED button (play via VLC)

When you press a button you will be given the chance to explore your pc
For a file, you can play any file from here.

With a bit of luck when you do choose a file you will see the message buffering and then the movie will play

Good luck

"A Wise Man can see more from the bottom of a well than a Fool can see from the top of a mountain."

I tried the VLC plugin with gemini, and it works...
but is is incredibly slow... so much that I thought I crashed the DB...
for example: After starting vlc in the PC, I start the vlc plugin at the DB...
no response for about 30sec... the I get a menu, press FILE.. another 15 sec...
press up/down to select the directory... wait another 15sec... press play... wait...wait...wait... zzzZZZZZzzzz... oh... look it's the file I selected... it's playing... yuppy... (with a very low image quality... must say...)
