Divx, Avi, Xvid format on DREAMBOX 600

Not sure about these formats. MPEG2 works great.
It might be cheaper to burn the files to a CD or DVD media and play them in any DVD player with DivX support.
Burn to rewritable media so that you won't have a big stack, unless you want to keep them as backup.
Surely you have a standalone DVD player? They are dead cheap nowadays.

If he were not a wizard, from head down to the root, you would have got to worry-your DB only boots

It can't play any of those formats. You can stream them from a PC running suitable software but it's easier to play them in a DVD player that can handle all formats, as HB suggested.

You don't stop playing because you get old, you get old because you stop playing. Regras

Yes point taken but i want to record from my tv so thats why i was going to but the harddrive plus i have failed to mount a cifs mount and the streaming with VLCf cuts out in the middle of the movie i havent tried that other streaming plugin that you recommened MHKU. Am i likely to have the same problem with that streaming plugin? Also its hard to believe that there is no codecs for the dreambox that will allow you to play these formats after all it is like a little computer isnt it?

The problem with DivX is that there might be a licensing issues there and that is why there is no plugin.

If you dont want to burn to DVD disk, You could also use a converter like ConvertXtoDVD to convert the DivX or whatever files.

The Dreambox should be able to read the resulting VOB files. Or you could us the DVD player feature/plugin in the blue panel to play as a complete DVD. It works a treat

I thought you already had a hard-drive installed, I highly recommend you install one regardless of playing Divx files, it will be money well spent.

I have a 40G drive which allows for around 20 hours worth of recording. If the drive gets full, I move stuff to my pc, I have it setup so that I can also play the files on the PC via Dreambox .

You'll get roughly 1 hour per 2 gig, so 30G would be enough for around 15 hours.
what size do you recommend Thanks
the bigger the better (up to a point).

By cifs mount,

Add the following line to the file, /etc/automount.cfg,
Code:
nfs -fstype=cifs,rw,soft,udp,nolock,rsize=8192,wsize=8192,user=dreambox,pass=pass ://192.168.1.2/k
Modify the username, password, IP address and folder you want to connect to. (Change the K after the IP address to whatever folder you want to mount.)

K is a second shared harddrive on the PC that I use for video / pictures / music.
e.g.
//192.168.1.2/YourMediaFolder

Or have a look at the attached image.
Go to Blue Panel / Extras Setup/ Automount

The share on the PC will be mounted to /automount/nfs on the Dreambox.
