Web Browser for DreamBox 7000S

It is possible to browse the internet with DreamBox 7000S (and possibly other models), after installing the Links Web Browser.

I found the attached file which was made in 2004 and was for 108 image.
Tested with Gemini 4.0 OK
Don't expect an Internet Explorer or Netscape performance, but it is a nice to have little plugin.
The navigation is not as easy as with the mouse, but you can scroll vertically with the Bouquetes +/- buttons and horizontally with the volume +/- buttons.
Also move the cursor up/down left/right with the four buttons on your remote.
A DreamBox Keyboard can be very helpful with the navigation.

To install, unzip the attached file and follow the instructions in the text file.
After installation, click on the blue button > Plugins > Links and the browser will go by default to the dream-multimedia website.
To change the default website, edit the var/etc/init file and change the www domain to your favourite one. remember to reboot after the change.

There might be a newer and better s/w. Will keep you informed on this thread.
The TD is supposed to have the Links. I am interested to know the latest version and I would be grateful if one can attach the file in a reply post.

The TD version is probably even earlier.

I attach its browser plugin for comparison (if it works on a DB.)

Works OK with my USB keyboard, but haven't found the cfg file to change the default website, so I have to enter URLs to access various sites.

Thanks Llew. I will take a look at it.

I am able to type the URL for a new website and there is a bookmarks menu that opens up by pressing the Help button.

The plugin generates a bookmark file located at:
/var/tuxbox/config/links/bookmarks.html
I am going to add my favourite URLs using an html editor and then choose the requested website by using the Help button.

Check if you have a similar file for the TD.

The start page is controlled by the init file, which looks like this:

if [ -e /var/etc/.tuxmaild ]; then /var/bin/tuxmaild; fi
crond

#Links Startpage
export WWW_HOME="www.dream-multimedia-tv.de"

Can't find any file related to Links apart from liblinks.so on the TD

Apparently, this version creates the confg file somewhere in my directories, but can I find it

Links Web Browser

It is possible now to install the Links Web Browser directly from the blue Button.

Blue Button > Addons > download (Gemini Server) > plugins (31 entries) > Links-Webbrowser
Download
Links-webbrowser-0.1-051125.tar.gz
File size 2.6M (1.755M compressed)
It worked fine with 7000S. I think that it should work for 7025 and 600 if an HD is installed
Not sure about 500 due to memory limitations. Please report.

After install, shutdown box and then restart.
Blue Button > Plugins > Links Webbrowser

The default home page is the I-Have-a-dreambox website.
You can change it to your favourite home page (check first if it uploads ok) by editting this file:
/var/etc/init
Change _www.I-have-a-dreambox.com/wbb2 to the prefered domain.
I changed it to www.eurotv.com
This way I can check the weekly programs on many channels without using the PC.
The Links application is a simple web browser and it needs a lot of patience.
A keyboard can be very helpful instead of the remote.
Enjoy.

My System: Dreambox 7025 Gemini 2 ver. 3.1.0 90cm dish on Hotbird

Hello guys,

First of all thanks for your replies.

I have tried downloading the plugin "Links Web Browser" directly from the blue Button but there was not such a plugin (Enigma version i have is 3.10 and the latest is 3.20. Version 4.0 is for dm7000. In my version listed plugins are only 13).

In any case I downloaded "Links-webbrowser-0.1-051125.tar.gz" from i-have-a-dreambox web site and I manually installed it on my dreambox. I rebooted the box but the plugin was not listed in my available plugins. I suppose that is not compatible with the enigma version I have or maybe the box.

Should you have any other suggestion please reply...

Thanks again, Merry XMas and

Hi adonisv,

How did you do the manual install and where did you put all the files?

The Links plugin requires that the Dreambox has either a HDD or USB memory stick or both.

If you get it to work, don't try browsing with Google as it will make your box hang.
Our forum can be browsed well. It is getting the registration login bit that is tricky.

You can use:
1 - Dreambox Keyboard, but price is too expensive
2 - Use a USB keyboard without keypad cost less that 10 pounds (see my thread about keyboards for Dreambox)
If you have already a USB stick, then use a USB hub for 4 devices.
I managed to do without the mouse.
Happy browsing.

New Web Browser

There is a new web browser plugin from the Blue Button:

e1-Links-2.1pre15_080202.tar.gz
By Cypher Labs

When I try to install it, it says that the installation was not successful.

I deleted the Links Web Browser and tried again, but without success.
I think that it is something to do with having a USB stick.
If anyone has success with the installation, please report back and tell us where to put all the files.
And also if it is has much improvements over the current Links Web Browser.
Thanks.
